Full DOs and DON'Ts
Whether it's a retailer or restaurateur, airline or air-conditioner seller, computer shop or car rental company, there are always two main risks. Either it's a dodgy company, or it's a legit company that has financial problems and goes bust.
The aim of these tips is to help you minimise the risks.
Quite simply, its customers are immediately transformed into creditors. This hits hardest if you've ordered goods or tickets from them, and not had delivery, as then you become one of a line of people trying to get your money back out of the company's assets, and you usually get back much less than you paid in.
Even if you've had delivery, if the company you bought from goes under and there's a problem with the goods, it can mean you've no comeback.
While MoneySavingExpert.com endeavours to check deals are valid, we don't check companies ' finances. Even huge names like MFI and Woolies have folded, so it's very important you use the right strategies to stay protected where possible.

MSE update 4.15pm, Fri 10 May: Canny forumites are reporting this glitch is also now working on bronzers, although we haven't had this confirmed yet.
This in-store trick can allow you to get £40 worth of No7 foundation for £15, by ‘stacking’ multiple promotions to get potentially huge discounts on make-up. It worked for us, but won’t necessarily in every store, so it’s a case of suck it & see (please report how it goes).
Step by step guide
Even with the initial £4 spend, it's a great price for three BB foundations which should cost £38.85 in total. When we tested this out (being polite and smiley), the cashier said she was happy to scan everything through and if it worked, then she could sell the items.
We only tested this on BB creams, but you could try other No7 products. It may be a case of luck of the draw if the vouchers are accepted by your cashier and we've not confirmed this with Boots in case it pulls the deal, so go quick if you want them.
This Boots trick has gone down a storm with forumites. See the Boots No7 BB cream glitch forum discussion thread.
When I tested this out, I asked someone in front of the queue whether they'd be using their No7 make-up voucher. The chap smiled at me before handing it over, so I was able to pay £11.42 in total, without the initial £4+ spend to get the £8 worth of No7 vouchers. Win!
Although it's usually a £5 spend to get the No7 voucher, Boots told us this time round it's £4.
