Breakdown Discounts
Read the email this appeared inBreakdown cover is costly and the two giants of the industry love to take a huge chunk of the pie. Yet as they’re fighting for business, if you’re in the know its possible to get roadside recovery at a fraction of the cost.
There are a raft of tricks listed below you can use to cut the cost which can get AA cover from as little as £10 and the RAC for just £9.
Yet don’t think you have to stick with the big boys, even with their deals. You can get full service policies from as little as £37, with similar call out times. For more on that read the full Cheap Roadside Recovery guide.
There are two methods to choose from, and which is best depends on where you shop.
- Method 1: 1/4 price via Tesco Clubcard deals
Tesco shoppers can swap their points for Clubcard Deals vouchers, worth four times the vouchers' normal in-store value. One of the deals available is RAC cover; the basic cover costs £15 worth of points, but there are a whole other range of deals too.
If you've got Clubcard deals saved up, this is a great system. For more, read the Cheap Breakdown Cover guide.
- Method 2: RAC cover £8 after cashback
Rather than signing up to the RAC direct, do it via a special 'cashback' website and you can currently get £20 cashback making a basic policy just £8. Cashback sites are websites that list retailers/product providers and get paid if you click through them. Importantly, they then give some or all of this cash to you.
If you're new to this concept, please read the Best Cashback Sites guide before continuing, as while there shouldn't be a problem with these deals, the payout on cashback sites is never guaranteed; if there's a dispute with the retailer and the cashback site doesn't get paid, you don't either.

There's a fiddly way for regular drivers to get continuous, free breakdown cover. Anyone who buys 30 litres of any fuel (or 10 litres for motorcycles) from a TOTAL garage can get two weeks free breakdown cover. If you're prepared for a bit of hassle, you can get this every time you buy petrol, giving continuous free cover.
TOTAL's fuel prices are fairly cheap in many places; not necessarily the cheapest, but not far off. You can speedily check the cheapest in your area by doing a quick search on petrol price comparison site Petrol Prices. It's likely that this promotion will last at least until the end of the summer, if not beyond.
How does it work?
- Visit a participating TOTAL garage and fill up with 30 litres of petrol (10 litres for motorcycles) in one go.
- You'll get a leaflet with a unique activation code. Text this to 82234 and you'll be texted back within 2 hours with a policy number, policy date and the breakdown helpine phone number. Your policy will start immediately.
- You must go through this within 24 hours of buying the fuel, and keep the receipt as you'll need it if you breakdown.
For continuous free cover, you'll need to time fill ups exactly every two weeks, as the policy must start within 24 hours of purchase. However you can overlap policies, eg take out one followed by another a week later, but this won't make the most of the deal.
What's included?
The vehicle is covered, not the individual, though this can be a car, motorcycle or light commercial vehicle. It's covered for breakdowns on the road or at home.
If it can;t be fixed by a rescue operator within an hour, your car plus up to 7 passengers will be taken to a local garage to be repaired (at your cost). The cover is nationwide but you'll only be towed to a garage within 15 miles of the breakdown.
Anything else?
When you call for breakdown help you'll need to tell it the date you purchased the fuel, so make sure you keep the receipt somewhere handy.

Again there are two ways to get cheap AA cover.
- Method 1: AA vehicle only cover for £10 after cashback
NOTE: While cashback for AA is usually available, it's not currently listed on any cashback sites though it may reappear in a few weeks.
As with the RAC, sign up via a special 'cashback' website and you can save big. Currently £17 cashback's available, making a basic policy just £10. Cashback sites are websites that list retailers/product providers and get paid if you click through them. Importantly, they then give some or all of this cash to you.If you're new to this concept, please read the Best Cashback Sites guide before continuing, as while there shouldn't be a problem with these deals, the payout on cashback sites is never guaranteed; if there's a dispute with the retailer and the cashback site doesn't get paid, you don't either.

- Method 2: Vehicle only cover for £35, plus £20 M&S vouchers
Sign up to the AA at the moment and it'll give you £20 M&S vouchers with any policy you take out. The basic roadside policy is £35 online, so you can effectively get cover for £15 if you use the vouchers for something you'd have bought anyway. It's not as good as the cashback deal, but it's guaranteed.
This only covers the one car though, rather than a person, and the car must be under 10 years old. You still get the vouchers with bigger policies, but the relative discount is diminished. Get this via the £20 M&S vouchers promo.
If you click through online and don't see the "£20 M&S voucher" on the page, it's probably because you've visited the AA site before and the old page is stored in your computer's cache. The AA knows about this problem and says if this occurs, people should call the phone number instead.
The offer's open to new customers and those who cancelled over six weeks ago. If you've an AA policy and are coming to renewal, you won't be eligible for this deal, but it's great for your haggling arsenal. Many who've told the AA they're unhappy with the renewal price and are considering trying elsewhere have been given heavy discounts ... throw this deal in the conversation and it should help.
