Many of us regularly reach for a cup of coffee or tea to give us a caffeine boost, but if you’re out and about the cost of this can mount up.
Did you know you can save on your takeaway brew by providing your own cup? This works at many of the popular high street chains, including Costa, Caffè Nero and Starbucks.
We’ve crunched the numbers so you don’t have to, and worked out the savings you could make – including how long it’d take you to earn back the cost of your own cup.
Starbucks – 25p off
You can get a 25p discount if you bring your own tumbler or cup to any Starbucks counter including at Cinemas and train stations. It also offers a reusable plastic cup (not a flask – it doesn’t close) in branches for ¬£1, which means you’ll make the money spent on the cup¬†back within a week if you go at least four times – as we know many do.
It doesn’t have to be a Starbucks branded cup, but you’d be hard pressed to find another dishwasher safe cup for ¬£1.
Costa – 25p off
There’s a similar offer available in Costa, ¬†where you’ll get 25p off if you bring your own cup. Costa says it doesn’t have to be one of its own, but it helps if it’s a similar size.¬†The cheapest reusable cup sold by Costa is ¬£3, so if you’ll use it more than 12 times you’ll have made your money back. You can see the full T&Cs on its website. Unfortunately, this offer isn’t available in Northern Ireland.
If you forget your own cup but still want to save the planet with your brew, Costa will now recycle any brand of paper takeaway cup in 2,000 of its locations, so it’s worth asking if you pass one on the way to work or home if they’re participating.
Caffè Nero Рdouble stamps
Unfortunately, you can’t get an immediate discount on your drink at Caff√® Nero, however, if you bring your own cup you will get twice the loyalty card stamps, meaning you’ll get your free drink sooner. Normally you’d have to buy nine drinks to get the 10th free, but with this offer you’d only have to buy five – or get the free drink via O2 Priority five times, as you can also get double stamps in conjunction with that offer.
Pret – 25p off
Initially, Pret planned to trial an offer of 25p off if you bring your own cup in London for the month of April¬†only. When we contacted Pret on Thu 4 May, it told us the offer is still ongoing, so it’s well worth asking for the discount if you’re at one of the participating stores.
Paul – 10p off
It might¬†not be the most MoneySaving, but if Paul is your choice for a brew, it offers 10p off when you bring your own cup. It sells Paul branded reusable cups for ¬£3.50, which means you’d have to buy 35 drinks before you made your money spent on the cup back.
Whilst you’re there, if you pick up a Paul loyalty card and register it online, you can get a free coffee with a croissant or pain au chocolat – tr√®s bon!
Planet Organic – double stamps
If you already have a KeepCup branded reusable cup and live near a Planet Organic, you’ll be pleased to know it has a similar offer to Caffe Nero – double loyalty card stamps when you bring your KeepCup. You’d still have to buy a week’s worth (five) of drinks in order to get one free, as it’s normally the 10th drink free after you buy nine.
Unfortunately, it can’t be any other brand of cup and the cheapest KeepCup at Planet Organic is ¬£9 – although you can get a free coffee when you buy it.
Free tea and coffee
See our free tea and coffee page if you’d like to stack your reusable cup with free or discounted hot drinks discounts at Ikea, Greggs, Waitrose and Booths.
