It's possible to get free BT line installation; this is a massive saving as usually it would set you back £122.50. This applies to new lines, reconnections or even having second lines fitted and isn't dependant on already having a master socket.

The deal was scheduled to end on Wed. 30 Sept, and while BT has confirmed it's been extended it's has not said when it will end.
However, it involves signing up for an 18 month contract, rather than the usual 12, and you'll need to make at least ten calls per month but these can be inclusive calls if you get a BT package. Either way though, the installation cost should dwarf any call costs.
This isn't available online; to get it you need to ring 0800 800 150, lines are open Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm, Saturday 8am to 8pm, Sunday 9am to 6pm. When you call, ask for the 'New line free connection offer'.
When BT ran a previous similar offer, there were some reports of people having difficulty getting the deal. BT has assured us the call centre is well briefed so there should be no problems this time.
You won't have to pay anything up front, it'll simply appear on your bill as a charge then a credit. If you do try and cancel your agreement before the 18 months is up, you'll have to pay the remainder of the contract.
You'll automatically get free weekend calls with BT's basic 'Unlimited Weekend Plan', which as the name suggests gives you inclusive weekend calls, without any additional fee. To do this you need to commit to a 18 month contract at the usual line rental cost of £11.25. Do ensure you sign up to paperless billing and pay by direct debit otherwise line rental shoots up to £14. While usually the evening and weekend package is also free, you won't get it with the free line installation offer.
Then to all other calls really cheap, you can simply use a specialist override provider like 18185 to cut the cost of calling landlines, mobiles and internationally. The savings are huge, sometimes over 90%. For full info on how that works see the Cheap Home Phones and Cheapest International Calls guides.
If you're wondering why we're suggesting going for BT rather than for a 'carrier pre-select service' where you pay BT line rental but use another provider for calls (like Sky calls), the problem is the need to make "10 chargeable BT calls a month".
The traditional technique is to dial the pre-fix 1280, which allows you to re-route calls back through BT, but these are starting to be blocked, and there's a risk over the next 18 months that could kaibosh your deal. For more info see the 1280 problems discussion.
