Audiobook provider Audible.co.uk is offering a 14-day free trial. It's possible to sign up, grab any two downloadable audiobooks completely free, then cancel before the trial ends.

Titles up for grabs in the deal include The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Lovely Bones as well as loads more science, comedy and non-fiction titles.

Audiobooks can be expensive (up to £30!) so these are great if you prefer your books heard, and not seen.

speaker How to get the free trial

Update: The free trial offer ended on 31 May 2010, but Audible's £50 Amazon voucher offer is on until 31 July 2010 (see below).

You'll need to sign up to Audible to get this offer, but ensure you cancel within the 14 day trial period so you don't get charged.

Audiobooks can be pricey - eg, Stieg Larsson's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is £24.99 from Audible.co.uk. Though this tends to be cheaper on CD ( we found it for £9.23 from Bookdepository.co.uk), it's still a good freebie.

Step 1: Sign up to Audible. Sign up to Audible before Mon 31 May. While you can choose either a 14-day trial of the basic package (£7.99 month), or the premium package (£14.99/mth), since you can grab the freebie and cancel the premium should cost nothing and will get you two free books instead of one.

Step 2: Got the right software? Check you've got the right software using the software wizard on the confirmation page. Tell it what you're using and it'll tell you what's needed (everything you need is free). If you already use iTunes on a Mac you won't need to download anything, and PC iTunes users will need the Audible Download Manager to get going (see the step-by-step guides).

Step 3: Pick your freebie. Over 40,000 titles are available, and none are excluded from the trial offer. If you're not sure whether to give this a go, browse the titles first.

Step 4: How to cancel. You can cancel either by calling call Audible's customer support team on 0800 082 5100 and ask to cancel. Or cancel online by going to your 'My Account' page and click on the cancel membership link in the green box on the top right. Make sure you note down your cancellation number.

Cancelling doesn't mean you can't make one off purchases from the site in future. Sadly, if you've already taken up the free trial offer you won't be able to do it again.

speaker What's on offer?

There are thousands of audiobooks to choose from, including many contemporary bestsellers, from Stieg Larsson's 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo*', to Alice Sebold's 'The Lovely Bones*'. There's also a big library of non-fiction, kids' books, comedies, biographies, and everything you'd expect to find at a bookshop.

speaker Amazon £50 voucher with £96 membership

If you're a heavy downloader, sign up through Audible's offer page before Sat 31 July and you can get a voucher for £50 off a single purchase from Amazon.co.uk, valid on selected audio items*, when you sign up for a year's membership (£7.99/month, so £95.88 for a year).

The membership gets you one audiobook per month. Its audiobooks are around £20-£25 each at full price, so if you'd usually buy more than around four or five per year it's worth getting a membership.

Can I get both offers?

You can if you're quick - the free trial ends on 31 May 2010, but sign up for your free books, cancel, and then sign up for the £50 offer with a year's membership. You can get the Amazon.co.uk offer even if you used to be a member of Audible, or if you've previously signed up to its trial.

Warning! Though you can cancel the trial, sign up for the membership and you'll be comitted to a year's payments. You can only cancel within 30 days if you haven't used your £50 code, or if you have used it but have returned the item to Amazon.co.uk and been refunded.

Remember to cancel your membership after a year if you don't want to continue, otherwise it'll automatically be renewed each month. See full terms*.

In the main body of the article two types of links are listed. The first, which all have a * within the main body of the articles, help MoneySavingExpert.com stay free to use, as they're 'affiliated links' which invisibly take you usually via affiliate linkage or commercial money sites, which then pay this site. It's worth noting this means the third party used may be named on any credit agreements.

The second type doesn't help and therefore doesn't have a *. You shouldn't notice any difference, the links don't impact the product at all and the editorial line (the things we write) is NEVER impacted by the revenue - we aim to look at all available products. If it isn't possible to get an affiliate link for the best product, it is still included in exactly the same way. For more details read how this site is financed.

Duplicate links of the * links above for the sake of transparency, but this version doesn't help MoneySavingExpert.com: Audible.
