TalkTalk customers will lose a 10% discount they currently enjoy for paying bills promptly, as the provider's axing its 'speedy payment discount' from 1 December.

It's a second blow for some customers who were also hit with inflation busting price hikes of up to 50% this month – see our TalkTalk news story for tips on beating the hike as well as our Haggle with TalkTalk guide.

Currently, TalkTalk broadband, landline and TV customers who operate their accounts online get a 10% discount when they pay their monthly bill by direct debit, credit or debit card within 24 hours of receiving it by email.

But the provider, which has more than 4 million customers, says users will no longer get this discount from 1 December. See our Cheap Broadband and Digital TV guides to find the best deals if you're thinking of switching.

We've previously alerted TalkTalk customers to the discount scheme, which launched in December 2013, although last November the discount was slashed from 15% to 10%.

Users hit by 'double whammy'

Some users have taken to social media to express their disappointment at the perk being axed:

TalkTalk says customers can't leave their contracts penalty free as a result of this perk being withdrawn. But if you use speedy discount each month and are unhappy it's being ditched, use the opportunity to call TalkTalk and negotiate a permanently lower price or haggle for extra benefits to make up for the perk being axed – see our Haggle with TalkTalk guide for how to do this.

What does TalkTalk say?

TalkTalk says there are a number of other ways customers can save, including by taking out its 'value line rental', which costs £191.16 – a 10% saving off the usual £17.70/month (£212.40/year) cost.

A TalkTalk spokesperson says: "We are bringing the speedy payment discount to an end but recently introduced Bill Busters, a range of features that save customers money and help them manage their bills. They range from usage alerts to help customers track spending to monthly usage allowance tools to avoid any bill surprises."
