Council tax rates in England could be frozen for one year for those whose local authorities can keep costs low, the Chancellor revealed in his Emergency Budget today.
The Government says it will work in partnership with local authorities to implement the hold in 2011/12 but it hasn't guaranteed freezes for all households.
Osborne said: "We will offer a deal to local authorities in England.
"If you can keep your cost increases low, then we will help you to freeze council tax for one year from next April."
He estimates the average family will be £35 better off next year as a result.
