Sat Nav

Read the email this appeared in

Using a Sat Nav to get from A to B is increasingly the rule rather than the exception, which is no surprise given their rapid descent in price over the last year.

It's possible to get a fully-featured touchscreen box for £55, or a bestselling TomTom unit for under £90.

THE CURRENT CHEAPEST:
Touchscreen SatNavs from £55!
Untitled Document navigo
  • The Cheapest:
Navigo V2 Sat Nav. £54.99 delivered.

The Navigo boxes from ebuyer have received glowing reviews across the board for their ease of use and number of features for the cash. They've been so popular in fact that there's now a new version out (pictured). While the features and spec remain basically the same, ebuyer promises this one's more sturdy and hard-wearing than its predecessor.

The unit includes full 7-digit postcode search, good battery life, and the ability to play MP3/4 files from SD cards through the supplied headphones.

  • Top deal!
Sony NV-U82 Sat Nav, £69.99 for collection.

This well-rated Sony unit is currently half price at Halfords. It's a bit of a bargain at this price, since it boasts a top-quality large 4.8" widescreen, full postcode search, a year of speed camera data and good reviews from a wide range of sources (at a much higher pricepoint).

Since it's a Sony, it also looks the part, and has a memory stick pro duo reader for your media files. The only downsides are its rather short battery life, owing to the size of the screen no doubt, and sometimes sluggish route recalculation.

  • Cheapest with EU mapping:
Garmin Nuvi 250 Sat Nav, £99.99 delivered.

Another well-rated unit, this compact Garmin's also cheapest at Halfords. Feature-wise, it's got full European maps, full postcode search, SD card slot and a long-life (up to five hours stated - expect four tops) rechargeable battery.

The little box has received excellent feedback for its usability, and it should be easy to keep up to date via the Garmin website. A 30-day subscription to speed camera data is also included; after that you'll have to pay.

  • TomTom:
TomTom ONE V3 UK, £89.99 (UK) £109.99 (Europe) delivered.

The release of 4th generation TomTom ONE units has pushed prices down for last year's version. The great thing about this is that when you buy a TomTom you can update to the latest maps for free, so map-wise there's no difference between the old and new one.

Both versions are cheapest at ebuyer; The UK version is £89.99, while the UK/Europe version is £122.

Sat Nav on your mobile.

Some newer mobile handsets include Sat Nav as standard, though you may have to pay a subscription for the mapping software. A mobile version of tomtom (Navigator 6) is available for around £60 (more with GPS adaptor), but has limited compatibility (See List). There's a cheaper, less comprehensive way though (if you've a head for tech stuff); you can buy a bluetooth mobile gps adaptor for around £30, and use free Nav4All GPS software for mapping (check compatibility). Try to get an adaptor based on a 'Sirfstar' chipset, as these are generally better regarded.

Anything else?

The price of mapping software on SD cards can vary quite widely, so if you think you'd like to upgrade your UK mapping to European check out the prices first. It may be cheaper in the long run to get one with the full maps in the first place.
