The music streaming service Deezer usually charges £9.99/mth for a premium, ad-free, offline-listening subscription. But we’ve a clever trick to bag six months’ premium membership absolutely free.
In a nutshell, it’s giving away a six-month membership to those on the Three network, but it’ll work if you get a (free) brand-new Sim too. You can see where this is going, now for the details…
What is Deezer?
Deezer is a music streaming service that’s been around since 2006. It carries a library of 35 million tracks – a little more than Spotify – and has around 16 million users.
It has a free version but it’s limited – you have to listen to ads, you can’t listen offline and on its mobile app you can only listen to ‘flow and mixes’ (automated personalised playlists), so can’t just search its on-demand library for tracks.
To get full functionality, you normally have to pay £9.99/mth for a Premium+ subscription.
Who can get six months’ free Premium+?
Until 12 May 2016, all Three customers who are new to Deezer Premium+ can get a six-month trial absolutely free. Given the tenner-a-month price tag and the fact you can usually only get a 30-day free trial of its premium subscription, this is a pretty sweet deal.
But even better, we’ve found a way for non-Three customers to bag the six-month trial too (you’ll need an unlocked phone or a friend with one you can borrow briefly).
And to be eligible, you can’t have had Deezer Premium+ before on a trial, or currently be subscribed to it.
How do I get it?
If you’re already with Three, go straight to step 2. For everyone else…
Step 1: Order a free Three pay-as-you-go Sim online – it’ll take three to five working days to arrive, and p&p is also free. You do NOT need to top up for this trick to work (we’ve tested it ourselves). Three says it ‘recommends’ customers have credit on their account, but in practice this doesn’t affect the verification steps below.
Step 2: Once you’ve got your Sim, go to the Deezer site, click ‘Start now’ to create an account and follow the verification steps to unlock your free membership. This involves getting a code via text, which is why you’ll need an unlocked (or Three-locked) phone to put the Sim into – you may need to turn your phone off and on again and wait up to 30 mins before it works.
You’ll have to agree to pay £9.99/mth for Deezer Premium+ once the six-month trial ends, but fear not, you won’t actually have to pay.
Cancel before the six months are up to avoid being charged
You can cancel the free trial at any time – otherwise, you’ll automatically be charged £9.99/mth once the six months end (if you’ve a pay-as-you-go Sim, it’ll be deducted from your credit, while pay-monthly customers will see a charge on their Three bills).
Deezer’s confirmed that even if you cancel straightaway, you’ll still be able to use the free trial for the remainder of the six months.
To cancel, call 0808 120 2341 (it’s a free number). You can also text ‘Stop’ to 78660, but you may need inclusive texts or credit for this. Alternatively you can contact Deezer directly to cancel.
Anything else?
If you do get a free Three PAYG Sim to get this deal, remember you only need to use that Sim to sign up to Deezer – once you’re registered, you can use Deezer on your normal mobile with your normal Sim.
It might be worth keeping the Three Sim to use when travelling though – Three’s Feel at Home feature lets you use your allowance abroad in 18 countries without paying additional fees. See our Mobile Roaming guide for full details.
NB: Of course it’s always possible Three or Deezer may change their T&Cs to close off the trick. If we find out that happens, we’ll update this page.
