Vegan-friendly restaurant deals for Veganuary – incl 40% off at Harvester, Pizza Hut & more
If you're one of the record 225,000 people taking part in Veganuary this year, or if like me, you're on your 13th (or more!) consecutive vegan January, chances are you like food. And animals. So I've rounded up the best discounts in vegan-friendly restaurants to help you save money and animals this month.
Whether new to vegan dining or not, you may be surprised by some of the restaurant chains with vegan options. Even eateries that are almost exclusively associated with meat and/or cheese – such as pizza places, burger joints and carveries – have recently been upping their plant-based game.
So here’s a quick round-up of the best, though do remember, even with a voucher, you’ll almost always pay full price for your drinks (To get round this, see our guide on your Tap Water Rights). Or, you could always pick up a free tea or coffee on the way home.
Pizza restaurants
Pizza Hut - 41% off food until Thu 24 Jan
Not only valid on vegan dishes (handy if you’re going there with a non-vegan companion), but a decent discount to try its new 'Vegan Jack 'N' Ch**se' vegan cheese pizza with jackfruit. Unfortunately, you can't use it on kids' meals.
Pizza Express - 2for1 on mains until Thu 31 Jan
This offer includes the new vegan jackfruit Puttanesca pizza (tomatoes, olives, capers, red onion, chilli, garlic and herb sauce) pizza. If you're also gluten-free, you can ask for a gluten-free base, which is vegan too.
Pizza Express also has vegan wines and desserts, but these sadly aren't included in the 2for1.
Zizzi - 2for1 vegan mains all month or 40% off your total food bill in most restaurants until Fri 18 Jan
You can order the new vegan 'Quattro no Maggi' four-vegan-cheese pizza using the 2for1 code, and you'll probably also want to add some fried herby potatoes and a sticky chocolate and praline torte if you're using the 40% off code (that means you can eat 40% more, right?). You can also ask for a vegan and gluten-free base at Zizzi.
Do check your local as the 40% offer could end earlier than Fri 18 Jan. You'll still be able to get the 2for1 on vegan mains until the end of the month, though.
Roast and burger restaurants
Frankie & Benny's - 50% off mains (valid until Tue 15 Jan, but usually replaced with similar)
At Frankie & Benny's, you can choose from two vegan burgers, two vegan pizza options with vegan cheese, vegan mac & cheese, a vegan hot dog, and for starters, vegan garlic bread or soup. A lot of these options are new, so if you've not been to F&B's for a while it might be worth it with a voucher.
Harvester - 40% off mains via app until Thu 17 Jan
Another restaurant with a new vegan menu is Harvester, which offers a choice of a bean burger, or 'Moving Mountains' meat-free burger with Violife vegan cheese. There's also a choice of three vegan desserts, including a vegan sundae.
Phew, writing this blog is making me hungry!
Toby Carvery - 33% off mains via app until Thu 24 Jan
Yes, I know, Toby Carvery is a carvery, which means meat, right? Well, yes, but you can still get vegan options, including roast mushroom and ale pie. There have been some menu changes for Veganuary, so you no longer have to ask for unglazed vegetables and can enjoy unlimited veg with your roast dinner - and still be vegan this January.
Handmade Burger Co - free side with vegan burger
If you pop down to a Handmade Burger Co, you can choose from six vegan burgers. Simply mention the word 'Veganuary' when ordering Monday to Thursday only, until Thu 31 Jan.
Sushi and tapas restaurants
Yo! Sushi - £3 plates Mon-Fri until Tue 29 Jan
As a lover of Japanese food, you might be surprised at the bredth of Yo! Sushi's new vegan-friendly menu. You can get 14 selected vegan plates for £3 Monday to Friday, including its award-winning tofu katsu curry, vegetable gyoza and even a miso chocolate dessert. Is it time for lunch yet?
Las Iguanas - 2for1 vegan mains until Thu 31 Jan
Get 2for1 on mains marked vegan from the a la carte menu, not including sides, drinks, or anything non-vegan. Choices include vegan nachos, jackfruit tacos, veggie chilli (ask for vegan), and more. Las Iguanas now offer vegan desserts, so save some room! Sadly, desserts aren't included in the 2for1, only mains.
How else can I get discounts on vegan food at restaurants?
You can also get 2for1 between Sunday and Thursday with Meerkat Meals, and we’ve full details on how you can manipulate the scheme to get 2for1 for a year and only pay £1ish.
If your phone’s on O2, you can also sometimes get offers like a £5 pizza at Pizza Express, or a free hot drink at Caffè Nero. See my deals-stacking trick for how to get 50+ FREE hot drinks a year using this offer.
It's more MoneySaving to cook at home, surely?
Of course, if you cook from scratch you'll almost always end up with a cheaper dinner than at a restaurant, but if you’re not in the mood to spend ages in the kitchen (and want minimal washing up), supermarket pizzas are a decent low-cost option.
You can now get vegan pizzas at most supermarkets. The cheapest we've seen is £2 at Iceland* (no-cheese Italian vegetable, or falafel pizza). You can also get a vegan Goodfellas falafel pizza for £2.50 from Tesco*, Sainsbury's, Morrisons* or Asda*. Other pizzas are available, but these are the cheapest.
