NOW CLOSED - ENDED MIDNIGHT SAT 12 SEPT - £6,000 DONATED
Free 50p to Europe Refugee Crisis Appeal for each new email recipient

The current refugee crisis is a sober reminder of real need: millions of families are risking their lives to flee war and persecution. These refugees need food, water and medical care to survive in camps and on long journeys.

If you're moved by the stories you’ve seen in the news, donations make a real impact. The Red Cross has workers trying to provide vital aid to families on the move.

Yet many here can't afford to donate, so we came up with a free way to help. MoneySavingExpert.com pledged 50p to the Red Cross's Europe Refugee Crisis Appeal for every genuine new UK recipient of the free weekly e-mail to sign up between 6pm 8 Sept and 11.59pm 12 Sept.

We did it before for the Haiti earthquake, Burma cyclone and South Asian tsunami appeals. We wanted to do it again. This is on top of the usual charity fund donations.

Final total: £5,965

We rounded this up to £6,000 - the money has been donated. While this has now closed, we've left the below up for information.

Tips to spread the word

This is a win-win

This gift is based on TheHungersite's charity fundraising model, and helps the Red Cross's appeal and our site, as well as newbies to save money.

The result will be included in next week's e-mail. On average, 2,700 sign up for the email every day, so even without any additional sign-ups, we’ll donate about £5,400.

To avoid busting the bank, the donation's capped at £50,000 (100,000 recipients).

How to donate even more

Why not take a day to give yourself a Money Makeover and donate a portion of what you save to the Red Cross Appeal? The savings from examining if you can save on every element of your finances can be huge – many can save over £1,000/year.

Remember to tick the Gift Aid box if you're a UK taxpayer (see full gift aid info).
