A whopping 51% of people would cancel Christmas and send Santa and his reindeer packing, according to a MoneySavingExpert.com poll which attracted over 20,000 votes.

Our poll asked users "If you had a big red CANCEL CHRISTMAS button that'd make the whole thing disappear (and just added the days to your holiday entitlement), would you press it?". It attracted 20,367 votes.

According to the results, men were far more bah humbug, with 57% of them saying cancel it, compared to 43% of women. The most festive group were parents, with 64% of them voting in favour of keeping Christmas.

Surprisingly, 54% of grandparents said they would rather go cold turkey.

The majority of singletons and couples without children would also rather not deck the halls, with 59% and 53% respectively voting to press the big red button.

'A one-day festivity has turned into a season, with Christmas starting in November'

Martin Lewis, founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, says: "It seems there is a collective bah humbug sweeping across the nation. Much of the chatter is because a one-day festivity has now turned into a season, with Christmas starting at the beginning of November.

"I doubt many people actually dislike the day itself – although being cooped up with the relatives does worry some – it's just all the days running up to it. Yet the constant pressure to buy gifts and presents, the drone of advertising and the ever-present tinkle of jingle bells in stores means people are far more keen to press the big red cancel Christmas button than sit on the proverbial knee of the big red fella."

See Martin's 'Is it time to ban Christmas presents?' blog to see if you and your family and friends can agree to stop sending gifts.
