Plusnet to double the price of BT Sport
Plusnet is to double the price of its BT Sport add-on from £5 to £10 a month for thousands of customers in September.
Plusnet offers a £5/month YouView TV package for its fibre broadband customers, which includes 42 Premier League games on BT Sport Lite.
These customers can also choose to add a BT Sport app to their package, which gives access to all BT Sport channels, and has live coverage of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.
At the moment, this feature costs an extra £5/mth on top of the base price of the customer's package – but from 17 September, this will be hiked to £10/mth.
But as the BT Sport add-on is a rolling monthly contract, if you're not happy about the price increase you can simply cancel this feature without a penalty.
Plusnet, which is part of the BT Group, says it's notifying its customers about the increase this week.
See our Digital TV guide for how to pick the right package and haggle a discount.
Can I leave Plusnet penalty-free?
If you'd like to cancel your Plusnet package completely, whether you'll have to pay a penalty will depend on whether your original package is still in contract or not.
Of course, there's no point leaving in a huff if your current deal will still be the cheapest for your needs – so check rival providers' prices using our Broadband Unbundled tool, and remember other providers also raise prices from time to time.
But if you do decide you want to leave:
If you're out of your minimum term for your Plusnet YouView package, you CAN cancel penalty-free as your package will now have moved onto a monthly rolling contract.
If you want to stick with Plusnet, see if you can use the BT Sport price rise to haggle a better deal on your package. Our poll in February 2019 found that 75% of customers who tried to haggle with Plusnet managed to get a discount. See Haggle with Service Providers.
If you're within your minimum term for your Plusnet YouView package, unfortunately you won't be able to cancel the whole package without paying a penalty, although you can still cancel the BT Sport add-on.
But you can tell Plusnet you're unhappy about the increased cost, and try to haggle a better deal – or at least use the hike as haggling ammunition when you come to the end of your contract.
