Unfair Tesco Clubcard Changes

Shake-up to reward scheme is a ‘slap in the face to 100,000s of loyal customers’

The UK’s biggest consumer website, MoneySavingExpert.com is calling on supermarket giant Tesco to urgently review its decision to slash the maximum boost customers can get with some Clubcard Reward Scheme partners by 25%.

The popular scheme previously let you swap Clubcard vouchers for Rewards ‘tokens’ worth up to four times as much with partner firms such as Prezzo, Café Rouge and Pizza Express. But Tesco announced yesterday that all rewards tokens will now be worth three times the value – with immediate effect.

Martin Lewis, founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, says: “Tesco has done a little, but it certainly doesn’t help. Under the guise of simplification,its changes to its reward scheme is a slap in the face to 100,000s of loyal customers.

The issue is that these changes have been made immediately without any notification. Many people save their reward points month after month after month, waiting to redeem on a big item. These changes leave many of those people missing out on £50 or £100 – not good when so many are struggling.

This is a terrible policy implementation by Tesco. I call on it to urgently review its policy to give a window of opportunity to those who’ve already saved substantial points, and will lose out by these changes, to still redeem at the prior value.”

Tesco emailed customers on Monday informing them of the immediate changes to the Clubcard Rewards Scheme prompting an angry reaction.

MoneySaver David told MSE: "I've just received an email from Tesco Clubcard ... having saved vouchers for almost two years, this is quite a blow and to do it with no notice whatsoever only piles insult on injury."

Nicola said: "Great notice huh? Had they given their valued customers adequate notice we could have taken advantage of the x4 before it changed as I never ever purchase 2x as I don’t find it good value for money when there are so many other sites offering 2for1, 50% off etc. Very disappointed as I use their 4x on days out and meals out regularly."
