Broadband and Phone deals

How do broadband and home phone deals work?

For the majority of deals you will still need a phone line to connect to the internet - even if you don't use your landline to make calls. There are usually line rental only options which mean you will pay extra for any calls you make, however if you still like a natter on the home phone, its often cheaper to add on a call package. These vary with each provider but often include options such as:

  • Weekend calls
  • Weekend and Evening calls
  • Anytime Landline calls
  • Anytime Landline and Mobile calls
  • Unlimited UK calls
  • International calls

I don't use my landline, can I find a deal where I don't need to pay line rental?

You can, though it's not often worth it. Virgin Media is the only major provider that allows you to have broadband with no phone line, but it's usually cheaper to take a deal for broadband AND line rental from it or another firm.

Which providers offer broadband and phone deals?

Almost all broadband providers offer broadband and home phone combo deals. They include:

  • BT
  • TalkTalk
  • Sky
  • Plusnet
  • EE
  • Vodafone
  • John Lewis Broadband
  • Virgin Media
  • Shell Energy Broadband

Our top need-to-knows

1

Who we do and don't compare

This tool looks at 24 of the biggest providers, including the giants of BT, Sky and Virgin. Plus special deals we've found or blagged that we think are top picks. Yet there are also many small providers we can't list - which occasionally have cheap deals - so it's always worth checking direct with any local provider you know of. Let us know if you find a top deal we've missed and see which providers this tool covers.

2

Switching can save you £100s

Many get a cheap promo deal for broadband, line rent and/or TV, and stick with it when it ends, usually paying £100s/year more than they started with. Don't let it be you - compare now and see if you could save

3

Fast advertised speeds don't mean faster broadband

Providers only have to advertise the average speed received by at least 50% of customers between 8pm and 10pm. Your actual speed can depend on a host of factors - see the full checklist of tips in Broadband Speed Boosting.

4

Consider your need for speed

If it's just you and the dog, you're likely to be fine with standard speeds averaging around 11Mb. If you share a house, or you use the web for movie downloads, streaming or gaming, you may want to opt for faster speeds in excess of 30Mb.

5

Beware of mid-contract switching costs

Usually you'll pay for the rest of the contract plus termination fees. If your provider increases prices mid-contract and didn't warn you before you signed up, you can switch penalty-free within 30 days of notification of the price hike.

FAQs

If a link has an * by it, it is an affiliated link that helps MoneySavingExpert stay free to use, as it is tracked to us. If you go through it, it can sometimes result in a payment or benefit to the site. It's worth noting this means the third party used may be named on any credit agreements.

You shouldn't notice any difference and the link will never negatively impact the product. Plus the editorial line (the things we write) is NEVER impacted by these links. We aim to look at all available products. If it isn't possible to get an affiliate link for the top deal, it is still included in exactly the same way, just with a non-paying link.
