Archive: MoneySavingExpert's Money Tips Email
The following is the text of Martin's Money Tip E-mail sent 31.12.04.
Read the previous week's normal Money Tip here
We can raise up to £30 million in 20 minutes at no cost
The scale of the disaster is huge, yet the cash needed is paltry by UK standards. With just 20 minutes effort at no personal cost, the recipients of this e-mail alone could raise more than the entire UK has donated.
As this e-mail goes to 167,000 people, using back of an envelope calculations:
- We'd raise £15 million from switching energy supplier. Take ten minutes right now to check if you're using the cheapest gas and electricity supplier (read article) and then donate half of your savings for the next year. (See later for how to donate)
- We'd raise £15 million from switching phone provider. It's possible to make all UK calls to landlines for a flat 1p (not 1p/min just 1p total) and no monthly fee (read article) again donate half your annual savings. (See later for how to donate)
Of course if you can't afford to donate half, don't worry, as you're making savings then donate what you can afford.
Forward this e-mail to everyone you know. If all the UK's adults followed the above we could raise over £2 billion, many times the entire world's donations so far. When you forward this do also let them know MoneySavingExpert is a no ads, free to use, non-profit driven consumer revenge site, so they know it isn't a tacky advert.
A personal pledge. I'll donate 50p per new person signing up to the Money Tips e-mail
To be honest with you I was on holiday when the Earthquake stuck, I'd gone West not East, so all I can think is, "there but for grace go I". I've already diverted the money in the site's charity fund to the disaster, but I really wanted to give more, so based on the logic of the hungersite, I've worked out I can afford to donate 50p per new genuine UK person* who joins up to the Martin's Money Tips e-mail distribution list before midnight on 4th January. To do it just go to www.moneysavingexpert.com/tips/
My thought process is simple, it gives people who can't afford to give a way to be involved; it helps the site; helps get new MoneySavers; and most importantly helps those in the disaster area. Plus more site users means more money for the Charity Fund. Please tell everyone you know.
How to donate.
To give money please go to http://www.dec.org.uk/ which allows online donations to be made instantly. Ensure whenever you're donating, if you're a taxpayer you tick the 'gift-aid' box - so the charity can claim back your tax (read article on how to give more to charity at no cost). For other ways to donate, take part in the Chat Forum ‘Tsunami disaster discussion'
That's it. Instead of my normal 'I hope you save some money', today
I hope you save some lives.
Happy New Year
Martin
*As a precaution, to ensure I don't cripple the site, I'm setting a cap of £10,000.
