Energy supplier rewards and referral schemes
Most energy suppliers now offer referral rewards if you get someone you know to switch to them, and some also offer ongoing rewards to existing customers. But don't switch just for a referral or rewards scheme. Always make sure you find the best tariff for you - use our Cheap Energy Club to find your cheapest. See the rewards as an added bonus.
This is the first incarnation of this guide. We'd love to know your thoughts and experiences with energy supplier reward schemes, or if you've any feedback or questions we've not answered. Let us know in the Energy supplier reward and referral schemes forum thread.
Energy supplier referral schemes
Energy supplier referral schemes can be an easy way to get some extra bill credit or vouchers if you know someone willing to switch to your firm or if someone you know is with a firm you're willing to switch to.
Do make sure it's the right decision for you or the person you're referring - a cheaper fix will very likely be better than a little extra bill credit or shopping voucher.
Always do a full market comparison before you switch. You can use our Cheap Energy Club for a bespoke comparison, so you can see how tariffs stack up based on your region and usage. Plus, it's worth noting that if we can switch you, we pay £20 dual-fuel cashback (£10 single fuel) - though you wouldn't also get a referral bonus if you switch through us.

To refer someone, you simply need to find and share your unique link
Referral schemes are very simple - with most suppliers, all you'll need to do is find your unique referral link. You can usually find this in your online account.
Simply grab that link and share it with your friend. You must make sure your friend uses this link to complete the switch in order to get any bonus.
On prepay? You can usually still benefit from refer a friend schemes
If you or your friend have a traditional (non-smart) prepayment meter, you can usually still get the referral bonus - you might just need to jump through some extra hoops. If the referral reward is bill credit you'll likely need to actively get in touch with your supplier and ask for the referral credit to be sent out as a pre-loaded key or card.
However, if you've got smart prepayment meters, it should be applied automatically, though some do ask you to get in touch so they can add it manually.
Can I keep switching to get multiple referral bonuses?
While you can switch energy suppliers as many times as you like to get multiple referral bonuses (provided you know someone who can refer you each time), you will usually be credit checked each time you sign up to a new supplier.
You'll also need to be aware of any early exit fees your tariff might have, which can easily wipe out the bonus.
Suppliers can reverse the referral reward if you switch away too soon
If the referred person cancels or switches to another supplier soon after receiving their reward, the supplier could reverse the bill credit. Generally, they need to stay with the supplier for at least 90 days, though some require them to stay as long as six months - always check your supplier's Ts&Cs to make sure.
Supplier reward and loyalty schemes
Many of the major energy providers have loyalty schemes, offering rewards to its existing customers. These schemes are not necessarily a reason to switch, but if you are already a customer, they could be worth checking out.
We've focused on supplier schemes that give freebies and let you earn discounts without having to do anything. However, there are additional schemes that reward you for reducing your energy use. Read our 'Get paid to cut your energy use' guide for more info.

You earn the bill credit each month by being an Ovo Beyond member, but not yet signed up to the Charge Anytime tariff. At the point you sign up to Charge Anytime, you'll then redeem the bill credit you've earned. So oddly, to get the maximum amount, you'd need to wait two years before signing up to its EV tariff. Make sure you compare EV tariffs before signing up.Solar panels discount. You can get up to £500 off solar panels and battery installation after two years as a member of Ovo Beyond. You must get solar panels and a battery installed by Ovo. Don't go with Ovo just for the offer - always make sure you get multiple quotes to find the best price for you. See our Solar panels guide for full info.
Free heat pump heating. If you get heat pumps from Ovo it says it'll give you one month of free heat for every two months you're with Ovo. It values a month's heating at £28.46 and you can only get a year of free heat - so that's a maximum of £341.25 you'd accrue over two years. It's paid as bill credit and you must be on its Heat Pump Plus tariff.
