Tesco shopper? The Pay+ and Clubcard apps are closing – don't get caught out at the checkout

Tesco shoppers who have ditched their physical Clubcard in favour of scanning their phone at the checkout will need to download the revamped Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app to avoid missing out on points. The supermarket is axing its Pay+ app on Monday 27 February, and shutting its separate Clubcard app on Tuesday 18 April.
Below we explain what you need to know about the closures, and for further info on how you can get the most from the Clubcard scheme, see our Reclaim and boost Clubcard vouchers guide.
Tesco is axing two apps this year
These are the two apps that are closing:
- Tesco Pay+ app – closes on Monday 27 February. This currently lets you store your credit or debit card and Clubcard details. When shopping in a Tesco store, you can then scan a single barcode in the app to quickly pay and collect Clubcard points. This function is now available in the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app (see below for more details).
- Clubcard app – closes on Tuesday 18 April. When we originally wrote this story, Tesco hadn't set a date for closing this app. It has since announced it will close on 18 April. You can currently use the Clubcard app to scan a digital version of your Clubcard at the checkout in store, as well as view and spend your vouchers.
You can avoid getting caught out at the checkout by downloading and switching to the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app below. You will not lose any points, vouchers or coupons as these will still be available via the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app or via your online account.
It's important to note, while they have similar names, the changes above won't affect Tesco Clubcard Pay+ debit card holders, or those with a Clubcard Plus subscription.
You need to download and use the revamped Clubcard & Grocery app
From Monday 27 February, if you want to scan a single barcode to pay and to collect Clubcard points in Tesco stores, you will need to download the revamped Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app (previously the Tesco Grocery app). It's available for free on Android and iPhone.
This app combines all the features of the apps above, with those of the previous Tesco Grocery app. So as well as using it to pay, you can also view your points balance, spend any Clubcard vouchers you've earned, order a grocery delivery and check stock in your local store.
What does Tesco say?
Tesco says the change aims to make things easier for shoppers by having everything in one app. A spokesperson told us: "Bringing the functionality of Tesco Pay+ into the Tesco Grocery & Clubcard app is a demonstration of our focus on providing products which closely align to the needs of Tesco shoppers."
