First-time buyers planning to use a Help to Buy equity loan to fund a new-build property purchase have until Monday (31 October) to submit their application. Almost 10 years since its original launch, the Government's equity loan scheme will close for good in March 2023, but anyone who wants to take part must apply by the beginning of next week.

The mortgage market is in turmoil, with several major lenders including Skipton Building Society and Virgin Money being the first to pull their deals from the market completely. Many others including Halifax, HSBC, Santander and TSB have since either withdrawn their fixed-rate offers or replaced them at hugely increased rates. As the turbulence continues, here's what you can and should do, if anything.

Ground rent is to be scrapped on new leases in England and Wales from 30 June when the Leasehold Reform (Ground Rent) Act takes force, the Government announced today (22 April). From this point, ground rent on new leases will never be more than a 'peppercorn' amount – in other words zero –  resulting in a potential saving of £100s a year for future homeowners and some existing leaseholders.

Platform and NatWest have today launched fixed-rate deals with the lowest ever interest rates seen on a two-year and five-year fix respectively, according to brokers. But while these mortgages won't necessarily be best for everyone, the headline-grabbing rates of 0.95% and 1.17% indicate that competition between lenders is currently fierce. So check now if you can save £1,000s on your mortgage.

According to the latest figures from HM Revenue & Customs, 141,100 first-time buyers have bought properties without having to pay stamp duty, and a further 39,400 have paid a discounted rate in the year since first-time buyers relief was introduced.
