Got a side hustle trading goods, creating online content or providing a service such as dog walking or delivery driving? New plans from the Government mean you will – in future – be able to earn up to £3,000 without having to submit a self-assessment tax return. But the change may not come in until 2029, and it DOESN'T mean you'll pay less tax. Here's what we know so far.

If you're one of the 3.4 million taxpayers yet to file their online self-assessment tax return or pay the tax due, you have just days left until the deadline. You must act soon as those who miss the deadlines face fines of at least £100 – plus 7.25% interest on any late tax payments.

The UK tax authority's digital services, including its webchat and online forms, have been branded "poor quality" and accused of "causing woe" for taxpayers by a leading tax advisory firm. It comes as less than two weeks remain until the self-assessment tax return deadline on 31 January 2025.

If you need to contact HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) for help with your tax return, you'll soon only be able to do through its webchat in most cases. That's because, starting from next month, HMRC will be closing its self-assessment telephone helpline for half the year – and will only open it for "priority" calls the rest of the time.
