The Supreme Court is today (Tuesday 1 April) starting its hearing into whether to uphold or overturn the Court of Appeal's surprise ruling that all car finance agreements with hidden commission were unlawful. Yet even if that decision is overturned, some mis-selling payouts are still likely. Here's what you need to know.

A motorist who mounted legal proceedings against a private parking firm after he was slapped with an £85 ticket for overstaying at one of its car parks has today lost his case at the highest court in the UK. But while the ruling makes it harder to challenge tickets on the grounds of 'excessive' cost, don't despair – it's still possible to fight unfair tickets.

MSE update: 11.53am, 9 June: The case is due to be heard at The Supreme Court on Tuesday 21 July 2015. The Barry Beavis v ParkingEye Ltd case will be heard alongside Cavendish Square Holding BV v Talal El Makdessi, which also involves the enforceability of penalties. A judgment is expected before the end of 2015.
