Students across the UK may be entitled to a refund of £50 on their TV licence fee.

The BBC is trialling a simpler way to pay for TV licences to allow those in need to evenly spread payments throughout the year.

The cost of a standard colour TV licence will rise to £150.50 from Sunday 1 April – an increase of £3.50.

BBC iPlayer will require users to set up an account and log in to use the service from next year, it was announced today. But the BBC insists the move isn't a way to enforce new rules which require you to have a TV licence if watching iPlayer.

From 1 September all users of the BBC's catch-up service iPlayer will be required by law to hold a TV licence.

Cash-strapped students returning home for the summer holidays can claim back up to £36 from the cost of their TV licence – as long as they took the licence out at the start of their annual studies.

The Government has announced it is to act "as soon as practicable" to close a loophole that currently allows viewers to watch BBC TV legally without paying the licence fee.
