The energy price cap rose by an average 54% on 1 April, with millions seeing their energy bills skyrocket. But many are reporting higher percentage rises, so we want to know how much firms are increasing direct debits by.

The energy price cap rose by an average 54% on 1 April 2022, with millions seeing their energy bills skyrocket. But many are reporting higher percentage rises, so we want to know how much firms are increasing monthly direct debits by.

We're asking for a percentage rise rather than as pounds, as what you pay is relative to your use, and we need to gain an overall picture of the market.

To work out your percentage increase:

  • Take what you pay now and divide it by how much you paid before the increase

  • Multiply the answer by 100

  • Subtract 100

For example, if your new direct debit is £200 and your old direct debit was £150, the calculation would be £200 ÷ £150 = 1.33, 1.33 × 100 = 133, 133 − 100 = 33. This gives a percentage increase of 33%.
