If you want your Christmas food shop delivered to your door, you'll need to pounce to get your preferred slot. Asda and Sainsbury's shoppers, for example, can currently get early access until Tuesday 20 and Friday 23 October respectively, while there's a trick for Tesco shoppers to get early access now ahead of slots opening in November. Other supermarkets, including Morrisons and M&S, are already taking bookings.

What you need to know before securing a delivery slot

  1. Act quickly – and check if you can edit your basket. There are still a couple of months to go before the big day, but bookings tend to go very quickly. We often recommend getting your order in with a few items to bag your slot, then making edits later – just check the deadline to make edits by.

  2. Take delivery fees and minimum spends into account. Especially if you don't have a delivery pass, which cuts delivery costs...

  3. A delivery pass can also help you bag priority slots. That's because pass holders typically get first dibs on Christmas and Easter slots. If you don't already have a pass, buying one now may not help you out for this Christmas, depending on which supermarket you shop with and when you pick one up. But it's still worth considering if you regularly get groceries delivered.

  4. Keep food costs in mind. Naturally, some supermarkets will charge more for Christmas-related items than others. Don't spend more than you otherwise would just to get a delivery slot. Use the free Trolley comparison tool to check the cost of items you regularly buy and set price alerts for them.
