Amex logoAmex Shop Small £5 cashback off £10£5 back at 1,000s of local stores for Amex cardholders

3 - 18 Dec

American Express often has cashback offers when you spend at certain stores, but this is the big one. Shop Small happens every December and is valid in 1,000s of local shops. What's more, you can use it alongside discount vouchers, or in a sale, to maximise the savings. Plus if you've got an Amex cashback card, you get your normal level of cashback as well.

Until Sun 18 Dec, American Express cardholders can get £5 cashback when spending £10+ at local businesses including restaurants, clothes shops, hotels, hairdressers and galleries by registering their Amex with the Shop Small website.

How it works

  • Register your Amex. Go to the Amex Shop Small website and register your card.
  • Start shopping. Find participating retailers and use your Amex for a purchase of £10+.
  • Wait for the £5 cashback. It should appear as a credit to your card between three and five days after payment. But in the worst cases, it may take up to eight weeks to show.

The offer only gets cashback once at each retailer per card but there’s no limit to the number of retailers you can get cashback from during the promotional period. Anyone with an American Express card issued in the UK (including those issued by Barclaycard, Lloyds and MBNA) qualifies, apart from corporate cards or pre-paid cards.

American Express regularly releases new cashback offers when you spend a set amount at certain stores.

What's more, you can use these offers alongside discount vouchers, or in a sale, to maximise the savings. Plus if you've got an Amex cashback card, you get your normal level of cashback as well.

£1 cashback when you spend £3 at Starbucks

Until Sun 27 Nov, American Express Platinum Cashback cardholders can get £1 cashback on a £3 spend at participating Starbucks stores. Once you've added the offer to your Amex card, it can be used up to five times. This even includes topping up your MyStarbucks loyalty card in store.

The offer's only available to the first 100,000 cardholders to add the offer to their cards (see how below), so you'll need to go quick if you want it.

How it works

  • Log in to your account. Log in online at American Express or via the Amex app.
  • Go to the 'Offers' section. Select the Starbucks offer and add it to your card. You must pre-select the offer online before you visit a store, you can't just walk in and pay.
  • Visit a store with your card. Find your nearest participating store and pay with your connected card to redeem the offer. You don’t need a code or a voucher.

Once you've redeemed an offer, you'll have to wait for the cash. It should appear as a credit to your card within five days of the payment, but could take up to 90 days to appear in your account.

It's worth noting that once the offer has been redeemed the maximum number of times, it will disappear from the site. See the full T&Cs.

Section 75

Free protection for all shopping!

There's a little-known piece of legislation that turns any credit card into a financial self-defence superhero. 'Section 75' of the Consumer Credit Act means your plastic must protect anything you buy for more than £100 for free, so if there's a problem or the company goes bust, you can still get your money back.

And although Section 75 doesn't apply to debit cards, there is something else to fall back on if you've paid using a debit card, or used a credit card for a purchase under £100. Known as Chargeback, this is part of banks' and card companies' internal rules and not a legal requirement. Read full details of Section 75 or Chargeback, plus how to claim, in our guides.
