Insurance firm Admiral is to give all of its car and van policyholders a flat-rate refund of £25 for each vehicle insured, in recognition of the fact that most people are staying at home and driving less during the coronavirus lockdown. And customers of Admiral's other brands – Bell, Diamond and Elephant – will also get the refunds.

The £25 refund will be automatically issued for each car and van covered with Admiral as of 20 April 2020, which makes for a total of 4.4 million refunds. You don't have to take any action to receive the refund – it'll be automatically credited to your payment card by the end of May.

Admiral says it is giving its customers the refund because there have been fewer cars on the road during the lockdown and it expects this to result in fewer claims.

The company says it will be contacting customers over the coming weeks to explain how they will receive the payment, but they can find full details by visiting its website.

We've asked other insurers, including Aviva, Axa and LV, if they have any plans to issue a flat-rate refund, but none have said they are following suit so far.

See our Coronavirus Finance & Bills Help and Coronavirus Life-in-Lockdown guides for more tips to save cash.

I still use my car/van – will I still get the refund?

Yes – Admiral says the refund has been calculated based on the lower driving frequency it's seeing, so all policyholders are eligible, including those who still need their vehicle.

My card has expired – will I still get the refund?

Admiral says even if your card has expired, your bank should still be able to ensure the payment reaches you, especially if you continue to have an account with them.

But it says that in a small number of cases the payment will fail and be returned to it. It says that in that situation it'll issue a cheque to you.

Will I get a refund for temporary vehicles on my policy?

No – the refund is only applicable to permanent vehicles on your policy. Policies provided by Veygo by Admiral are also excluded.

If I cancel my policy, will I still get the refund?

Yes – even if you now choose to cancel your policy, so long as you had insurance on 20 April 2020, you'll get the £25 refund.
