Tesco shopper? Check if you can earn up to £50 in bonus Clubcard points with its limited new offer
If you have a Tesco Clubcard, you may be able to earn up to £50 in bonus points from Monday 20 May, as the supermarket is trialling a limited new promotion called 'Clubcard Challenges' for some shoppers. If invited, you'll be able to earn the extra points by hitting certain personalised targets on your spending.
Below is everything we know about the new offer. For more on getting the most out of Tesco's loyalty scheme, see our Clubcard reclaim and boost guide.
Check your emails and the Tesco app to see if you're eligible
Tesco says the challenges will initially only be available to three million Clubcard holders who "regularly engage with Tesco digitally" and who have opted in to receive marketing communications from it.
If you're chosen to take part, you should by now have received an email to the address you signed up to Clubcard with inviting you to take part.
You'll also see a banner notification in the Tesco Grocery and Clubcard app with further details on your individual challenges. If you don't currently have the app, you can download it for free on iOS or Android.
How Tesco's Clubcard Challenges will work
Here's what you need to know:
The offer starts on Monday 20 May and will run for six weeks. Tesco told us it will monitor shopper feedback on the offer over the six-week trial before deciding whether or not to expand it to all Clubcard holders.
If eligible, you'll be offered 20 spending challenges and will be able to complete up to 10 of these. You'll be shown these via email or in the Tesco app. We've asked Tesco if you have to choose which ones to complete in advance and opt in to them separately, and we'll update this story when we know more.
However when we checked the account of one Tesco shopper who'd been offered the promotion, they had to manually select which challenge/s they wanted to apply to their account. They could also deselect challenges if they changed their mind and choose another.
Each challenge this Tesco shopper saw had the potential to earn between 50 and 500 Clubcard points depending on how much they spent. One of their challenges was to spend either £4, £7 or £9 on Pilgrims Choice Cheese, with the number of Clubcard points available to earn increasing with higher spending.
Tesco told us challenges will be personalised based on your spending habits. Examples it gave us include spending £20 on Tesco's Summer BBQ range over the course of the six-week period, or spending £10 on plant-based ready meals.
You'll be able to earn up to £100-worth of bonus Clubcard points. The maximum you'll be able to earn from completing all 10 challenges is 5,000 Clubcard points, worth £50 to spend in Tesco – or £100 if you redeem them with one of Tesco's 'Reward Partners', such Cineworld, Pizza Express and Thorpe Park (see our Clubcard points boosting guide for more on this).
Normally, you have to spend £1 at Tesco to earn one Clubcard point, and each 100 Clubcard points is equal to £1 in Tesco vouchers, which you can double up by redeeming with a Reward Partner.
Don't use this promotion as an excuse to overspend
Only buy what you were planning to anyway and see the challenges as an added boost if you do hit the targets. Keep the Money Mantras in mind: Do you need it? Can you afford it? Will you use it? And is it worth it?
You'll continue to earn Clubcard points at their usual level even if you don't reach the goals of the challenge.
