Twitter/X users report bizarre glitch that takes them to MSE's car finance reclaim page – but we AREN'T behind this
If you've used the social media platform Twitter – also known as X – over the past month or so, you may have encountered a bizarre glitch where tapping on any image, video or link unexpectedly takes you to MoneySavingExpert.com's (MSE's) car finance free reclaim page. To be clear: this ISN'T an advert, we AREN'T behind it, and we've reported it to X to investigate.
The issue appears to have started around Wednesday 22 May. Since then, we've seen hundreds of similar reports, and while the issue appeared to have abated, it's since resurfaced and was still happening when we checked today (Monday 1 July). Some users say they get taken to other websites, not just MSE.
At MSE, we use Twitter to share MoneySaving tips and updates through our official profiles @MoneySavingExp and @MSE_Deals – but we DON'T advertise on the platform. Our founder Martin Lewis also has a profile @MartinSLewis.
It's not clear why this is happening – but we suspect it relates to a recent 'community note'
Twitter's community notes feature allows select users of the platform to add extra information, context or fact-checks under any given post.
The redirection issue seems to have cropped up around the same time that a community note was added to a claim firm's advert about mis-sold car finance.
The community note in question linked to our free car finance reclaim tool & guide – the same page that users who encounter the glitch are sent to.
To be clear – we didn't add this community note, and we don't know for sure that it's what's causing the issue, but it's our best guess based on what we know so far.
We've reported the issue to Twitter/X
Twitter/X has so far not explained what's causing the glitch or if there is anything users can do to avoid it.
We've repeatedly asked the company for clarification and we'll update this story if and when we get a response.
