A major investigation into hidden, unfair car finance commission has had a huge update, which MoneySavingExpert.com founder Martin Lewis has said could double the number of people who are due a payout. Here's what we know so far, though it's still early days and Martin cautions we have "lots more reading and thinking to do".

The base rate has been cut to 4.75% from 5% by the Bank of England. This rate is used by the central bank to charge other banks and lenders when they borrow money, so the move can impact mortgage and savings rates.

Universities in England will be able to charge full-time undergraduate students up to £9,535 a year from 2025/26, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has announced today (Monday 4 November). Student living loans, also known as maintenance loans, will also rise by 3.1%, in a move MoneySavingExpert.com founder Martin Lewis called "better than nowt".

Pensions will be subject to Inheritance Tax (IHT) from April 2027, the Chancellor has announced, though the vast majority of estates will still not pay IHT despite the changes.

If you're an unpaid carer, you'll soon be able to earn £45 more a week without losing your entitlement to Carer's Allowance. The move has been announced by the Chancellor Rachel Reeves in today's Autumn Budget. From 7 April 2025, the earnings limit for carers will rise from £151 to £196 – but earn a penny over this and you'll still see the entire benefit clawed back.
