Netflix to hike prices by up to £24 a year – here's what you need to know

Netflix is raising prices across all of its plans by up to £24 a year for both new and existing subscribers. The increases came into effect for newbies on Thursday 6 February, while existing members will be given 30 days' notice by email.
Here's how the cost of each plan is changing:
-
'Standard with adverts' is going up by £1 from £4.99 to £5.99 a month (a 20% or £12 a year increase).
-
'Standard' (without ads) is going up by £2 from £10.99 to £12.99 a month (an 18% or £24 a year increase).
-
'Premium' is going up by £1 from £17.99 to £18.99 a month (a 6% or £12 a year increase).
Netflix is also upping the cost of having or adding additional members to your plan:
-
'Extra Member' (without ads) is going up by £1 from £4.99 to £5.99 a month (a 20% or £12 a year increase).
-
'Extra Member (with ads)' is going up by £1 from £3.99 to £4.99 (a 25% or £12 a year increase). This plan was quietly introduced in October 2024.
Netflix last raised prices in October 2023. But it also axed its 'Basic' plan in July 2024, meaning those subscribers had to pay £36 more a year to watch ad-free.
Want to stick with Netflix? Check if you can cut costs
There are three main options:
-
Consider switching to a cheaper plan. For example, if you're paying for Premium but don't need all the bells and whistles, switching to a Standard plan could save you £6 a month or £72 a year. See our table below for what each plan offers:

None
One – for £4.99/month extra with ads (or £5.99/month ad-free)
Two – for £4.99/month extra each with ads (or £5.99/month ad-free)
(1) When adding an Extra Member with ads, the account holder will continue to stream ad-free. For more info on adding users outside of your household, see Netflix's website.
-
Share an account with a friend or family member who lives with you. The Standard plan without adverts lets you watch on two screens at once – and you don't have to be watching the same thing. Getting one subscription and splitting the cost with someone else means that you'll both only pay £6.50 a month for ad-free, HD streaming.
If you live with two or three others who use Netflix, you can save even more by splitting the Premium plan – now £18.99 a month – and paying £6.33 a month or £4.75 a month each. You'll be able to watch in ultra HD, too.
-
Ask someone else who pays for Netflix to add you as an Extra Member. This is an option if the person you want to share with doesn't live with you. If they added you as an Extra Member without ads, you could split a Standard subscription and bring the cost down to £9.49 each a month.
Unhappy about the move? Ditch – and maybe switch
If you're unhappy about the shake-up and no longer want to stick with Netflix, your options are to:
-
Cancel Netflix penalty-free at any time. Log in and select 'Cancel Membership' in the membership and billing section – you'll be able to keep using Netflix as normal for the remainder of your billing period.
-
Check for cheaper alternatives. Other big streaming services offer cheaper monthly subscriptions. For example, Disney+ Standard with Ads is £4.99 a month (but can be cheaper, see Disney+ deals), Amazon Prime's video-only plan (with ads) is £5.99 a month, Apple+ TV is £8.99 a month and Now Entertainment is £6.99 a month (if you lock in to a six-month contract). See our top streaming services comparison.
-
Use free trials to watch over two months of top shows and films. Some streaming services give free trials, including 30 days of Amazon Prime Video and seven days of Apple TV+, but always remember to cancel before you're charged if you don't want to keep it. See free video-streaming trials.
-
Rotate between streaming services so you're not paying for more than one at a time. If you subscribe to Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and Now Entertainment, it's at least £23.96 a month. Yet it's easy to typically pay £6 to £9 a month and still watch the top shows by paying for just one service, then cancelling it and moving on after you've seen what you want. See our tips on how best to jump between streaming services.
