Millions of Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland customers have seen their overdraft costs rise this month, some by hundreds of pounds a year.

Almost 600,000 Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland customers who fell behind on their mortgage payments are in line for a payout totalling £283 million.

More than 900,000 current accounts have been switched in the last 12 months – a drop of 14% compared with the previous year.
