There are lots of ways to watch sports on TV, with different events spread across various streaming and paid-TV services – it can get confusing and quickly add up to £100s a month. We've a quick guide to which channels show which sports and the best ways to watch 'em.

This is the first incarnation of this guide. If you've any feedback, please let us know in the Where to watch sports on TV forum thread.

How to watch sport for free

The most cost-effective way to watch sports is by taking advantage of free-to-air channels and streaming services, though this does limit which sporting events you'll be able to watch.

While more and more sports have shifted to subscription-based services, which can quickly get expensive, there are still a few free-to-air channels and streaming sites where you can catch some live action.

If you want to watch paid-for sports - make sure you don't overpay

There are three main sports broadcasters in the UK right now: Sky Sports, TNT Sports and Amazon Prime. Some of these can come with hefty monthly costs, so if you do want to subscribe, make sure you don't overpay.

If you’re only interested in sports, consider a standalone sports subscription, such as Now Sports (through Now TV) or TNT Sports, rather than paying for a full package of TV channels.

If you want to watch more than just sports, you're probably better off getting a digital TV package, which often includes your broadband connection. The main TV package providers are Sky, Virgin Media, EE TV and TalkTalk.

What's the cheapest way to watch Sky Sports?

Sky Sports is one of the most popular sports broadcasters, showing a wide range of live events across 12 dedicated channels. Its coverage includes major competitions such as the Premier League, EFL, Formula 1, international cricket, golf, rugby, and more.

It's generally quite pricey, so make sure you choose the right package for you. Options include bundling it with traditional TV packages such as Sky or Virgin Media, or grabbing a standalone Sky Sports pass via Now TV.

Updated February 2026. (1) The cost doesn't factor in providers' annual price hikes. (2) EE TV's Full Works package includes Now TV membership, plus TNT Sports channels. (3) Includes Netflix and Discovery+. (4) Will include HBO Max (with ads) and Disney+ (with ads) from March 2026. (5) Sky Sports HD is available through Virgin Media’s Stream box (£5/month). All Flex add-ons are on a one-month rolling contract.

Now Sports Saver Membership for £27.99 a month is currently the cheapest way to watch Sky Sports. However, that price only includes standard HD streaming (720p), full HD (1080p) quality costs more.

If you don’t mind committing to a 24‑month contract and want full HD included as standard, Sky Stream Essentials with Sky Sports added works out better value overall, even though the price is likely to rise during the contract.

Want to watch sports all year round? Consider adding it to your digital TV package

The traditional way of accessing paid-for sports – by adding these channels when you sign up for a TV package (or adding them to an existing one) with the likes of Sky or Virgin Media - is generally quite pricey, and locks you into long-term contracts, usually for 24 months. But it might be more cost-effective if you watch sport all year round and you want other channels as well. Try haggling with your TV provider to get a cheap Sky Sports add-on.

But if you only watch one or two sports, many of the seasons only tend to span part of the year, so you end up paying for months you don't watch anything, which is wasteful. So it's best to work out what you want to watch and which months they're shown so you don't overpay.

Don't have or want a TV package? You can get a Sky Sports pass via Now TV

If you don't have or want a full digital TV package, but still want Sky Sports, you can get a standalone Sky Sports pass via Now TV*.

This gives you access to all 12 Sky Sports channels, with the option to sign up on a rolling monthly basis at £34.99 or you can sign up to their 12-month saver for £27.99 a month (£34.99 thereafter). There’s also a 24‑hour pass available if you only want to watch a specific event. While the monthly option offers flexibility – letting you cancel whenever you like – it does come at a higher cost compared with longer‑term deals available elsewhere.

It’s also worth noting that you can’t record on Now TV (though you can pause and rewind live programmes). After an event airs, it’s usually added to the on-demand library, where you can watch highlights or full catch-up content later. However, it may take up to 24 hours for some events to appear in the catch-up section.

For more information on how to watch TV (and movies) online have a look at our guide on free legal streaming.

If you're on a one-month rolling Now TV contract, we've found that trying to cancel can trigger a retention offer. When we tested this ourselves, we were able to secure a discount. Here’s how we did it:

  1. Go to cancel your 'Sports Membership' in your Now TV account.

  2. Press 'Continue' until you reach the below page.

  3. Press 'Claim new offer' if you're happy with it.

Now TV told us that it regularly updates the discounts it offers, so you may receive a different deal, or possibly no offer at all.

What's the cheapest way to watch TNT Sports?

TNT Sports (previously known as BT Sport) is another major broadcaster of live sports, with 12 channels covering the UEFA Champions League, Premier League football, Premiership Rugby, MotoGP, UFC, and others.

The easiest way to watch TNT Sports is via the Discovery+ app, which lets you subscribe (and unsubscribe) on a monthly-rolling basis.

You can also add it through traditional TV packages with providers like Sky and Virgin Media, or grab it is an add-on with certain broadband or mobile plans with EE. While this can be cheaper, bear in mind you do have to be in contract with the provider for its other TV, broadband or mobile services (which may not be the cheapest).

Correct as of April 2026. (1) The cost doesn't factor in providers' annual price hikes and it doesn't include the base cost of the service required in order to take out TNT Sport. (2) In some cases, you'll need to sign up for its broadband service or mobile plan to be eligible for a TV package. We haven't included the cost of that here as it varies depending on which package you sign up to. (3) Package includes an EE TV Box Mini which allows you to pause and rewind live TV. (4) Even though it's a one-month rolling contract, the cost is included in your broadband package and is subject to annual price increases along with the rest of your plan.

What's the cheapest way to watch sport on Amazon Prime?

Over the last few years, Amazon Prime has started broadcasting live coverage of selected Premier League and FA Cup fixtures, tennis tournaments like the US Open, rugby, and others. Unlike traditional broadcasters, Amazon delivers its sport content exclusively through its streaming platform.

While its offering is fairly limited compared to the others above, if you're already a Prime member, much of this content is included at no extra cost.

If you're not already a member, and you've never had Prime before, you might be eligible for a 30-day free trial - so do keep an eye out if there's an event on Prime you're interested in. If not, Amazon Prime is £8.99 a month or £95 a year.

Note: You need a TV licence to watch live sport on Amazon Prime Video, as it counts as watching a live broadcast. This rule doesn’t apply to on‑demand content.
