Millions using vouchers to slash costs

There are over 400 times as many people using discount vouchers on their shopping as there were five years ago, research reveals.
One firm alone says around seven million people have used a voucher from its site this year, which is evidence that MoneySaving is sweeping the nation (see the Restaurant, Shopping, Supermarket and Days Out deals to slash costs).
The website Vouchercodes.com says consumers have accessed 14.3 million vouchers from its site so far this year, compared to 9 million last year, 2.5 million in 2007 and 35,000 in 2004.
Around half of codes downloaded are then used. This site's figures also show a dramatic rise in voucher use.
There were just under four million visits to our deals pages last month compared to just over three million in December last year and 600,000 in July last year.
It doesn't mean all those readers then use a voucher but indicates a massive hike in those seeking money-off deals.
Many stores and restaurants have turned to money-off deals to attract custom during the recession, to help fuel the voucher boom.
A survey of British Hospitality Association members in August found 88% of restaurants polled have turned to special promotions to drum up business in 2009.
Rose Harris, MoneySavingExpert.com deals analyst, says: "A new generation of savvy shoppers have realised the price tag isn't always the price you have to pay.
"There are plenty of ways to get money off, if you know where to look.
"Discount vouchers and online codes are quick and easy to use and can save you a small fortune."
