Just over one million Virgin Media customers will get a free broadband speed boost and be upgraded to the firm's M100 package, meaning they'll get average broadband speeds of 108Mbps.

As part of the upgrades, which start today, more than half a million Virgin Media customers will see their broadband speeds double and some will see their speeds increase five-fold.

If you're one of the affected customers, you won't have to pay anything extra to get the speed boost, and you don't have to do anything – the upgrade will happen automatically and you'll be emailed a notification when it's done. Virgin says the vast majority of customers will be upgraded by the end of March.

Whose speed will be boosted?

The speed boost will only apply to customers who joined Virgin Media before 1 December 2019, and to those on the following tariffs:

  • M50

  • L50

  • L70

  • Capped Fibre 20
