Santander to close 111 branches by August - here's the full list and where you can bank instead

The bank last closed branches in January 2019 when it shut 140 outlets. Santander says the majority of the latest branches due to be closed are within three miles of another branch, while two thirds of its transactions are now digital. It adds that the number of face-to-face transactions in branch halved during the pandemic.

You can still use Post Office services if your local branch is closing

Santander says customers who use the branches scheduled to close will be notified three months beforehand and provided info on alternative local branches they can use, as well as info on alternative ways to bank, such as by using online banking. 

If you're new to online banking or unsure how to use it Santander will run free online events in April and May to help educate customers. You can sign up for these via Santander's website. You can also contact Santander on 0800 085 0879 for further help and use its online branch finder tool to locate your nearest. 

Santander customers can also deposit and withdraw money from any of the Post Office's 11,500 branches.  These Post Office branches also enable customers to check their balance and to pay cheques into their account. Use the Post Office's branch finder tool to locate your nearest. 

You may want to consider switching if you want bank branch access 

Alternatively, if you no longer want to stay with Santander you might want to consider switching to a bank that does have a local branch nearby - although bear in mind there's no guarantee it too won't close in future. 

Banks with branches that currently have switching incentives include the following: 

• HSBC, which is offering a £125 cash bonus, plus a 1% linked regular savings account. 

• Virgin Money, which is offering a free case of wine, plus 2.02% interest on up to £1,000.
