Millions of pensioners could see their Winter Fuel Payments reinstated this winter as a charity has launched legal proceedings against the UK Government, aiming to reverse its decision to restrict the payments to those on certain benefits. It's still very early days and there are no guarantees, but here's what you need to know.

Winter Fuel Payments – a tax-free payment made to all pensioners to help with winter energy bills – are to be restricted to those on benefits and Pension Credit, the Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced. EDF Energy has launched a new tariff tapping into the anger about the high level of standing charges set by regulator Ofgem under its Price Cap. The new EDF Ensure* tracker tariff is effectively a discounted version of the Price Cap that will be £50 cheaper over the year – and it does this by lowering standing charges, not unit rates.

MoneySavingExpert.com founder Martin Lewis said the move is a much-needed fix for the broken energy market, though while "better late than never", he cautioned that the change is still too far off.
