Hopeful holidaymakers who need to apply for a new or renewed passport have been urged to do it as soon as possible, after the Passport Office warned applications may take 10 weeks to process, instead of the usual three if you apply online.

There is currently a backlog of 410,000 UK passport applications due to coronavirus-related delays, according to new Government figures. 

Just over three million applications for pricier fast-track passport renewals have been made in the past five years, costing travellers an extra £130 million, MoneySavingExpert.com can reveal.

The Post Office will now let you renew your passport digitally - but it'll cost £15 more than doing it yourself, and you'll have to go into one of the 725 participating branches. 

Travellers who are renewing their passports are now getting up to nine months' less validity, after an under-the-radar change to Passport Office rules, MoneySavingExpert can reveal. 

Hundreds of thousands of Brits are paying more than they need to for a new or replacement passport, official data obtained by MoneySavingExpert.com reveals.

The price of applying for a passport is set to increase on Tuesday 27 March by £3 if you do it online and £12.50 if you do it by post – but there's a way to lock in today's cheaper price if you're due to renew right up until the end of 2018.
