Cigarette smokers will pay more under a new tax system to come into effect in a couple of months, the Chancellor announced in today's Budget.

Those who enjoy fizzy drinks, cigarettes and wine will be hit by tax changes announced in the 2016 Budget – but taxes on cider, beer, whisky and other spirits have been frozen.

The tax on beer will fall by 1p and the duty on cider and spirits will be cut by 2% from 23 March, but smokers will be hit by higher prices from tonight, the Chancellor George Osborne has today announced.

Shoppers looking to bag Christmas bargains overseas this year should beware import costs and taxes before they buy, HM Revenue and Customs is warning.
