Energy direct debits help
Paying your energy bill by monthly Direct Debit can save more than £100 a year compared with paying when you receive a bill. Yet with Direct Debit, suppliers base them on an estimate of your usage over a year, and then divide this by 12. If that's wrong, you can end up overpaying – and last year around £3.5bn was held in credit by suppliers. Here's how to make sure your bill is fair and what to do if it's not.

A dial electricity meter, showing usage in kilowatt hours (kWh).
On 1 April energy prices rose for most households. To avoid being charged more than you should, it's a good idea to give a meter reading to your supplier as soon as possible to avoid a dispute over what you used before and after prices changed. You can still do it for a few days after, and some firms even let you feed in backdated readings after 1 April. We've a full supplier-by-supplier breakdown below.

Energy mythbusting.
With energy bills still extremely high, using less energy is a key way to cut bills, and there are obvious ways to do this, such as turning your lights and heating off when you're out. But this guide aims to crack the less-obvious energy conundrums, such as whether it's better to leave your heating on all day and if it's worth turning devices off standby mode.

cheap heating oil
More than 1.5 million UK households that rely on a heating oil tank to warm their homes risk overpaying due to an under-regulated market that gets too little political attention – and right now, prices are at all time highs. There's no slick solution, but there are things you can try to cut heating oil prices.

You have a right to a fair Direct Debit, this is enshrined under energy regulator Ofgem's licence conditions. Firms must set it based on the best available information. Yet many people often, though not always rightly, feel they are being hard done by, so how do firms actually decide what you'll pay?

Octopus Energy to buy Shell Energy UK.
Octopus Energy has bought Shell Energy UK in a move which will see Shell's gas and electricity customers moved to Octopus. If you're with Shell, your account, including payment details, will be transferred automatically in the coming weeks and months – just look out for a welcome email from Octopus. Until then, there are no changes and you should keep paying your bills as normal.

Regulator Ofgem has changed its calculations on how much energy a 'typical' household uses. This means the headline annual costs for the new Price Cap from 1 October and other energy tariffs may seem a little cheaper than they have been recently. But don't be fooled, prices won't be falling as much as it may seem.

Is Octopus Agile worth switching to?
Agile Octopus is a variable tariff where the rates you pay for energy can change half hourly, based on wholesale prices. It's been cheaper than the Price Cap recently – and it even paid customers up to £22 to use electricity in July. It's not right for everyone, but if you use the tariff the right way, it could mean big savings. We've full info below.

Energy Price Cap update.
Energy regulator Ofgem has this morning announced the new Energy Price Cap and, as expected, it's set to drop significantly. From Saturday 1 July, it'll fall to £2,074 a year for a typical household, 17% lower than the current Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) level. This means the EPG will fall away and almost everyone's bills will once again be controlled by the Price Cap.
