Emily has over six years of experience in journalism, starting her career as a local news reporter in 2018 before joining MSE in May 2021. She has tackled a range of critical topics at MSE, including consumer rights, energy, debt, and financial regulation.

Some of Emily's biggest stories include Ryanair's barring of customers who received Covid refunds, the shutdown of tax rebate firm Tax Credits Ltd for forgery, and discrepancies in the Warm Home Discount scheme. These stories have been covered by some of the UK's biggest newspaper outlets, including the Daily Mirror, the Daily Express, The Sun and The Guardian.

Emily has earned several award wins and nominations, including winning the Rising Star of the Year Award at the Headline Money Awards in 2023 and being shortlisted for the Wincott Foundation's Personal Finance Journalist of the Year Award alongside MSE founder Martin Lewis. In 2022, she also won an MHP's 30Under30 Young Journalist Award in the Personal Finance category.

Outside of journalism, Emily is passionate about writing plays and short fiction, and enjoys hiking, running, and reading.

The UK tax office is to refund 60,000 people that had tax rebates processed by Tax Credits Ltd. The move comes after a MoneySavingExpert.com (MSE) investigation found that the third-party tax rebate firm was alleged to have submitted claims using forged signatures, without consent, and made it difficult for people to get hold of any money owed.

Bank of England increases base rate to 2.25%
The Bank of England has increased the base rate from 1.75% to 2.25% – the highest it has been in 14 years. This rate is used by the central bank to charge other banks and lenders when they borrow money – and so it influences what borrowers pay and what savers earn.

John Lewis Partnership credit card-holders will no longer be able to use their Mastercards from 6pm on 31 October 2022. The fare for single bus journeys in England will be capped at £2 between 1 January and 31 March next year, while in Scotland rail fares will be frozen until at least March 2023, both in an effort to help tackle the cost of living crisis. The bus fare cap will only apply to single journeys but the Department for Transport (DfT) said the move could save passengers an average of £3 per single fare.
