"I am not a scrounger, and this is why"
One man's story | Plus free 5-min benefits check-up — don't be put off getting what you're entitled to
Not everyone on benefits is a scrounger. Nor does everyone get £26,000/yr, despite what the recent "cap 'em" debate's made some believe - far from it. Of course, some abuse the system, and the system abuses others by failing to make work pay. Yet the current vitriol risks putting those in need off getting what they're entitled to, eg, 1m pensioners don't claim pension credit, even though they've often paid into the system for all their working lives...

Wrist tumour:
"Imagine the reaction when I shake hands at job interviews"
|
-
"I'm not a scrounger". After a chance Twitter conversation, we invited Ross Goodall to be a guest contributor this week. The bus driver became unable to work due to the tumour on his wrist (pic right - we've his permission to share it) and in his words, "I’ve two young children and a partner to support on a smidgeon over £11,000 a year's benefits" - Read Ross's story.
- Do a five-minute benefit check-up. Benefits and tax credits aren't solely for the unemployed, the web stretches much wider than you think, usually up to families with a sub-£40,000 income (higher for those with specific needs, eg, disabilities). We've a special, detailed Benefits Check-up Tool that asks a range of questions, then lists what you're entitled to. Payouts will change in April, but being up and running now helps.

Water saving FREEBIES — beat the 5.7% rise
Hikes due in April, slash bills by £100s now and grab freebies galore
Water regulator Ofwat has announced bills will jump on 1 April in England & Wales.
The avg rise will be 5.7% but in one region it's 8.8% (see regional hikes). So slice the costs down.
- Step 1: Can you save £100s with a water meter? Standard water bills are based on 'rateable' values — roughly a property's rentable value in 1990 (when Vanilla Ice was no.1)! Water meters measure both water and sewerage, thus our simple rule of thumb is....
"If you've more bedrooms than people in your house, - check out a meter."
A single person in a four-bed house could save up to £200 a year. See water meter calculators for how to do a full check..
- Step 2: If they won't fit a water meter — get an 'assessed bill'. Water companies must fit meters for free on request (not Scotland/NI) unless it's impractical, such as for flats with shared pipes. If so and you're missing out, request an assessed charge bill which is worked out on likely usage, not house value. You'll only be switched if it's less than you currently pay.
- Step 3: Water saving freebies (not just for meter users). Water companies currently have scores of freebies to give away such as 50,000 shower heads for higher pressure at low use from Thames Water, save-a-flush bags from Bristol Water, Anglian Water and Yorkshire Water, bath buoys from Thames Water and Severn Trent and shower timers from Yorkshire Water, Wessex Water, Sutton & East Surrey Water. These don't just save water, they save energy too (using less hot water can cut £100s off energy bills). See the full Water Saving Freebies.
- Step 4: Change your habits. There are tons of water savings tips from the obvious 'turn taps off when brushing teeth' and 'don't overfill kettles' to 'while letting tap run for cold water, catch it in a pint glass to water plants. Plus the famous night-time mantra, that scares even us...
