Tesco Clubcard revamp means shoppers can double-up all year
Tesco is revamping its loyalty points scheme, meaning Clubcard customers will be able to double-up their points in certain departments all year round.
Shoppers who hold a Tesco Clubcard get one point for every £1 spent either in-store or online. Points can also be earned at other selected retailers (see our Tesco Clubcard guide for how to reclaim lost points).
Each point is then worth 1p to spend at Tesco, which are sent as Clubcard vouchers every three months (as long as you have at least 150 points).
Currently you can also get up to 4x the value of these points in its Rewards scheme, where you can swap them for items including restaurant vouchers or days out.
Tesco also usually runs an Exchange scheme a few times a year for about two months a time, which means you can double your points' value in certain departments in-store and online at Tesco.
But from Monday, Rewards and Exchange will be replaced by a new Clubcard Boost scheme.
Customers will still however be able to use their Clubcard vouchers to take money off their shopping at face value.
What's changing?
Rewards: Little changes here apart from the name. You'll still be able to exchange Clubcard points for up to 4x the value to spend on experiences, days out and meals from over 800 Clubcard Boost partners.
You'll have to swap your points on a new Boost website, which launches on Monday. All rewards stay at the same value, and the overall number of rewards will also remain the same.
To launch the new scheme, customers will be able to exchange £2.50-worth of Clubcard vouchers for a Cineworld or Odeon cinema ticket until 26 August. This normally costs £4 in vouchers at Cineworld, and £4.50 for Odeon.
Exchange: Under the new scheme, customers can swap points for Boost tokens all year round. But you'll only be able to spend your vouchers in five core departments for now, compared with eight during this year's summer exchange.
Additional categories will added from time to time, for example, during the summer and at Christmas.
What vouchers can I boost to spend at Tesco?
A minimum of £5 of Clubcard vouchers can be doubled up for Boost tokens.
In-store and on Tesco's clothing and groceries websites, only Clubcard vouchers in £5 multiples can be exchanged – but these can be made of smaller vouchers, for example two £2.50 vouchers. It means £5 worth of vouchers will become a £10 Boost token.
If the total in vouchers is not a multiple of five, you will get a rounded-down figure exchanged, and the difference credited back to your Clubcard account in points. So if you have a £7 voucher, you can convert £5 of that into a £10 Boost token with the remaining £2 credited back to your account in points.
If you buy something online from Tesco Direct (which doesn't sell clothing or groceries), you can exchange any value above £5 in Clubcard vouchers – it doesn't have to be in multiples of £5.
There's no limit on the number of Clubcard vouchers that can be exchanged and no limit on the amount in tokens that can be redeemed.
Where can I swap Clubcard vouchers for Boost tokens?
Customers can exchange their vouchers for in-store tokens at all stores, excluding Express branches, as well as online. Double-ups can also be made online.
What can I use Boost tokens on?
Before swapping vouchers in-store, identify the department you want to spend the voucher in. The voucher will then only be valid for that section. This also applies if you're buying clothing or groceries online.
However, if you want to use Boost tokens online at Tesco Direct, you don't need to select the department first – you can spend in any department in the exchange. Your vouchers will appear automatically at the checkout and you can choose whether or not to boost them and use them.
Boost tokens cannot be exchanged back into points, into a token for another department, or into cash.
These departments will take part, both online and in-store.
Clothing
Baby and toddler
Cosmetics and fragrance
Cook and dine and home (pots, pans, etc, not food)
In addition, Tesco Opticians is included, but only in-store. Exclusions apply, so check before exchanging. Tesco will review which departments take part at the end of the year.
Where can I spend Boost tokens?
Tokens can be spent in all stores where the product you want is available, as well as online at Tesco. Customers can also buy online and collect from one of Tesco's 'click and collect' stores.
Can I get change from Boost tokens?
No. This means you can't use a £10 token to buy an £8 item, even if you accept you'll lose £2.
Can I buy something worth more than I have in Boost tokens?
Yes. You can pay the difference yourself.
What if I buy something and want to return it?
Items purchased with an exchange token can only be exchanged for goods in the same department.
If you want a refund, you will get the initial Clubcard value, NOT the doubled-up value of the Boost token.
Is there a deadline?
Clubcard vouchers can be converted to Boost tokens from 9am on 29 July until 31 December. Tokens are then valid for six months.
