Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco to cut petrol prices again

All four supermarkets will lower the price of unleaded by 2p/litre and diesel by 1p/litre at all of their forecourts in time for the weekend.

Today's announcement means drivers will pay no more than 110.7p/litre on unleaded and no more than 117.7p/litre for diesel at Asda as the supermarket has a national petrol price cap. For drivers filling up elsewhere, pump prices will vary regionally.

Asda says it has cut fuel prices 11 times since the end of September, taking 16p/litre off unleaded and 12p/litre off diesel. It adds that the continuing price cuts are a result of falling oil prices and that this is the lowest price it has charged for fuel since October 2010.

Morrisons meanwhile says this will be its fourth price cut in the last nine days and Sainsbury's says this is the fifth time in three weeks it has dropped the price of fuel.

According to the latest figures from Petrolprices.com, the average UK price for a litre of diesel was 122.23p/litre on Monday (15 December), while the cost of unleaded petrol stood at 116.42p/litre.
