MoneySavingExpert.com has scooped third place in YouGov's top brand rankings of 2018, coming out ahead of Lidl, Ikea and BBC iPlayer.

It's the fifth year in a row we've made the market research firm's list of the UK's top 10 brands, and this is our best ever result – even though we don't really think about ourselves as a 'brand' at all, we just focus all our efforts on our main goal of saving people money.

We came fifth in 2017 and fourth in 2016, and have now overtaken Lidl and BBC iPlayer to take the bronze medal, out of a whopping 1,585 brands.

How are the rankings worked out?

YouGov surveyed respondents about the 1,585 brands in its BrandIndex, asking: "If you've heard anything about the brand in the last two weeks, through advertising, news or word of mouth, was it positive or negative?"

It then subtracted the percentage of negative responses from the percentage of positive responses for each brand to work out a "buzz score".

The final rankings are based on average "buzz scores" between January and December 2018.
