Halifax and Lloyds to close 40 more branches this year – here's the full list, plus alternatives
Lloyds Banking Group has announced another round of bank branch closures, with 18 more Halifax locations and 22 more Lloyds outlets set to shut between April and June this year. The latest closures mean the two banks will close at least 59 branches by the end of the year. Below we list the branches disappearing and what the alternatives are if you still want face-to-face banking.
Halifax and Lloyds aren't the only banks shutting branches – HSBC is closing 114 branches this year, NatWest is closing 43 and Barclays will shut 26.
Alternative ways to bank face-to-face with Halifax and Lloyds
Halifax: See if a 'community banker' is visiting your area
Halifax 'community bankers' may visit an area for a short period of time after a branch closes. They'll have a dedicated office space in a local venue for you to chat in private and can offer support with account enquiries.
There's no need to book an appointment in advance – you can check if a community banker is visiting your area on Halifax's website and then just turn up.
However, be aware that community bankers don't offer cash or counter services, so you won't be able to manage your money with them. If you need access to these services you can use a Post Office branch.
Lloyds: Check if Lloyds' 'mobile branch' service is available in your area
Lloyds runs a mobile branch service that enables customers in England and Wales to access certain services in their local area at specific times and dates each month. You can check if a nearby town is covered on Lloyds' website.
Some of the services available as part of the mobile branch service are:
Cash/cheque deposits.
Managing standing orders and direct debits.
Paying bills.
Sending money outside the UK.
Withdrawing cash.
Halifax AND Lloyds: You can access some banking services via the Post Office
Customers of most UK banks, including Halifax and Lloyds can access certain services from any of the Post Office's 11,400 branches. Use the Post Office's branch finder tool to locate your nearest. Services available include:
Cash/cheque deposits.
Checking your balance.
Withdrawing money.
If you need branch access and don't have alternative services nearby, consider switching
If you no longer want to stay with Halifax or Lloyds, you might want to consider switching to a bank that does have a local branch nearby – although bear in mind there's no guarantee that too won't close.
Banks currently offering cash switching incentives include:
Santander - get £200 for switching. If you've never had a switch bonus from Santander before, you can get the free cash by switching a non-Santander group current account (includes Cahoot and Cater Allen) to a number of Santander's accounts. See Santander switch info for the options and our top pick.
First Direct - get £175 for switching. Newbies who switch to First Direct can get a free £175. Plus, it's well-rated for service and offers a linked regular saver paying 7% interest. To get the free cash, you can't have ever had any account with First Direct, nor have opened a current account with sister bank HSBC since January 2019.
First Direct doesn't have any branches of its own, but First Direct customers can use HSBC branches to pay in cheques, as well as deposit and withdraw cash. So it could be an option if you have an HSBC branch nearby – though bear in mind HSBC is also closing lots of branches.
See our Best bank accounts guide for more options including the best bank accounts for savings interest and longer-term rewards.
Some may want to consider setting up online banking
Of course, if you want to switch to banking online or via an app, Halifax and Lloyds both have step-by-step guides on how to set up online and app banking – click the link to go your bank's website and get started.
