Seven destinations, including Canada and Switzerland, will be added to the 'green' traffic light list from next week, the UK government has announced. The system is used to govern the action holidaymakers must take when they return to the UK from overseas.

France is to be moved back on to the Government's standard 'amber' travel list for holidaymakers returning to the UK from Sunday. The change means travellers who are fully vaccinated or under 18 will not have to self-isolate on their return.

Spain's Balearic Islands – including Ibiza, Majorca and Menorca – are to be moved from the Government's 'green' travel list to the amber list from Monday for travellers returning to England, Scotland and Wales. The change means holidaymakers who are not fully vaccinated or under 18 will have to self-isolate for up to 10 days on their return.

Portugal has been taken off the UK-wide 'green list' of quarantine-free travel destinations, in a blow to holidaymakers which will leave many scrambling to rearrange trips or get a refund. The rules on holidaying are changing radically. Domestic trips are now allowed across much of the UK, while some overseas holidays are also back on the agenda.

From 17 May, holidaymakers in England will be able to visit countries including Portugal, Gibraltar and Israel without needing to quarantine on their return, as international travel restrictions are relaxed. But if you're considering booking, remember each destination may also have its own entry restrictions - and right now, nearly all of the 'green list' countries are currently refusing entry to British tourists. 

Hopeful holidaymakers who need to apply for a new or renewed passport have been urged to do it as soon as possible, after the Passport Office warned applications may take 10 weeks to process, instead of the usual three if you apply online.
