Major energy suppliers STILL have millions of pounds worth in grants – in some cases worth thousands – available to support households experiencing financial difficulties. So check now if you're eligible to claim.

With energy bills almost doubling this winter and looking set to rise again by more than 40% next year, MoneySavingExpert.com founder Martin Lewis takes a detailed look at the current situation and how much higher bills might climb in 2023. Energy suppliers have been told to do more to help support vulnerable customers this winter by the energy regulator. Improvements called for include demonstrating more clearly how pre-payment customers, who may be self-disconnecting, are identified and supported. 

Customers of collapsed rent-to-own company BrightHouse, who may have been mis-sold high cost loans, will not get any money back after the firm's joint administrators said there wasn't enough cash to refund people. However, those still repaying BrightHouse loans must continue to do so as the debts have now been sold on. 

The energy price guarantee, which was introduced on 1 October to protect households from a hideous 80% increase in energy bills, will now only last until April 2023, rather than for the next two years as originally planned. Watch out for fake text messages claiming to be from the Government, inviting you to apply for the £400 energy bill support. They're a scam – the £400 will be paid automatically. You do not need to apply.

Ovo Energy has announced a new support package for its customers, which will kick in this winter. Crucially, it plans to introduce a payment holiday for prepayment customers in debt from 1 October. Other measures include increasing the amount of emergency credit prepay users can get, offering free energy saving products and boiler services, plus additional funding for its grants scheme. 

Thousands of Shell Energy prepayment meter customers on standard variable tariffs will receive a refund of just under a tenner on average after being overcharged for the past three years. In total, 11,275 customers will receive a share of £136,970.
