Nationwide has paid around 20,000 banking customers £60 in compensation after a technical error saw their direct debits fail as a result of not being able to transfer funds into their accounts. Others may also be able to claim refunds or goodwill payments - though there are no guarantees.

Nationwide customers have been unable to transfer money in or out of their bank account since around 7am, leaving some without wages just days before Christmas. The bank says it is trying to resolve the problem, which means there is currently a delay on outbound and inbound faster payments.

Thousands of savers hoping to transfer to Nationwide's 'Member Exclusive Fixed Rate ISA' are facing delays, with some waiting as long as three months. It comes after the building society was inundated with requests for the new account, which was a MoneySavingExpert.com best buy at the time of its launch in March.
