Martin's Quick Briefing

Quick! Earn £100 for Xmas shopping
Now's the PERFECT time to grab cashback cards

Two top cashback cards are giving huge boosts for the first three months, so apply now and you'll get it for the high spend Christmas shopping and Jan sales periods. Just set up a direct debit to repay IN FULL each month, so there's no interest, and use the cards for ALL normal spending. After all, you're paid to use them.

  • 5% (£5 per £100) cashback - paid out next year

The American Express Platinum* credit card pays accepted new customers 5% of everything spent (up to £2,000) in the first 3 months, then tiered up to 1.25% after. The cashback's paid a year from the application date (provided you've spent £3,000+ in that time). It needs total household income of £30,000+ to get. See full MSE briefing

  • Free £90 voucher M&S/Boots etc - in time for Xmas

The Amex Rewards* credit card pays gift vouchers inc. Amazon, Boots, M&S and more. In the first 3 mths, there's a bonus 6,000 points (worth £30 of vouchers) each month you spend £500+, plus the usual generous points scheme (1.5% in supermarkets, 0.5% normally). As soon as you get enough for a £25 vouch. you can redeem it. See full MSE briefing

  • You get 6 mths 0% too. Both Amex cards are six months 0% on spending, so if necessary you can spread the cost - though do clear all debts 6 months or it jumps to a HUGE 17.9-19.9% APR.

  • Best non-Amex cashback. If you've already got an Amex, or need a back-up for when it's not accepted (see who takes Amex), some existing Halifax bank account customers can get its Rewards Clarity* credit card, which pays £5 cashback per month you spend £300+. Alternatively the Capital One World Mastercard* gives 1% cashback and a £10 yearly bonus, but has an £18 annual fee.

Always repay these in full each month, or the interest cost dwarfs the cashback as it's 12.9 or 19.9% APR respectively.

FREE 'No Cold Callers' Sign - new rules start FRIDAY
From Fri all energy salesmen MUST 'officially' obey Cold Caller Signs

On Fri the EnergySure code of practice will officially include rules that energy company sales staff shouldn't knock on any doors displaying a 'no cold callers' sign. Free MSE 'No Cold Callers' Sign: To help you take advantage asap we've designed a Trading Standards approved 'no cold callers' sign you can speedily print and put on your door or window. While energy sales people should obey, not every salesman will. If they don't, just point at the sign, politely ask 'em to leave and report them to the company. Stop Junk Mail, Calls & Faxes: There are a range of 'preference services' which allow you to STOP junk mail, direct mail, telephone calls and faxes just by filling out an online form. New top 2.8% cash ISA AND 2.89% savings
Best buys toppled. Boost interest with full access or lock away for more

A glut of new top savings deals launch this week, all with full UK £50,000 savings safety protection. New Top Easy-Access Cash ISA: An ISA's simply a tax-free savings account each adult can stash up to £5,100 per tax-year. The rate's variable but it's likely to stay high for a year, then drop after, so be prepared to transfer elsewhere. It is beaten by Santander's 3.2% flexible ISA, but only for its existing bank acc customers (and is branch only). More deals inc. higher paying fixes in the top cash ISAs guide. New Top Easy Access Savings: The new Natwest* e-Savings will pay 2.89%, but 1.85% of this is a bonus lasting a year so be prepared to ditch. Warning! Mortgage benefits halved from Friday
230,000 see 'Support for Mortgage Interest' drop by £2,400/yr per £100k

Nearly 230,000 people who've lost jobs or had big income cuts get Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI) benefits to help cover their home loan costs, yet from 1 Oct the Govt's slicing payouts. What's changed? It's designed to cover the interest on mortgages up to £200,000, and currently assumes everyone's charged 6.08%, yet from Fri that's cut to 3.63%. The impact? On a £150,000 mortgage the payout drops from £760 a month to £450/mth - a cut of £3,700 a year. Do I get more if my rate's higher? No. This cut's partly as interest rates have dropped, but if you're paying over 3.63% as many are, it makes no difference. What can I do? Urgently redo your budget (see free budget planner) as this is a serious drop in income, plus go through the full money makeover on all bills. Check for other benefits: You may be entitled to other payments, so do a 5 minute check on free site Turn2us. Also consider speaking to your lender about possibly switching to interest-only payments, and see if it can give you a better rate (a remortgage to another company is unlikely). 1 million PPI letter downloads! 81% win at Ombudsman
Many have reclaimed £1,000s back, but millions more must CHECK NOW!
Anyone who's got or had a personal loan, secured loan, credit card or store card should check ASAP if they can reclaim - typically it's £1,500 on a £5,000 loan. Billions of Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) have been missold, through saying it's compulsory, adding it on without telling, giving the self-employed employment cover, not discussing pre-existing conditions & more. 1 million letters - should be more: We're excited to have hit 1m MSE template letter downloads, but it should be more. Millions are eligible to claim and haven't, others gave up after their bank said no - without realising that means nothing - and some have paid claims' handlers a huge cut of their winnings, when it's easy to do yourself. How to reclaim: Use the guide to see whether you were missold, then write to your bank asking for money back. IT'LL SAY NO but that's irrelevant, just then go to the free Ombudsman where the success rate is an enormous 81% (ie, 4 in 5 win). See the Full Guide inc. template letters: PPI Reclaiming Related: Bank Charges, Council Tax Rebanding

Money Moral Dilemma

MONEY MORAL DILEMMA:
Should I help out my ex with cash?

Last year I was made redundant and my boyfriend (who lived with me) gave me money to pay my mortgage and bills. Earlier this year he left me & bought a house. We're still friends, and I'm devastated about the break up & struggle with guilt over the money. He doesn't have the money to replace his grim bathroom and kitchen. I feel I should repay the money he gave me, yet he says not to worry. By working extra hours I could afford a loan, but I'm worried about stretching myself too far. Is it a good idea? Question Of The Week

MoneySaving Polls

Q. Is it right or legal that, when I tried to pay off my mortgage, the Woolwich told me I've got to pay another £275 on top of a final repayment charge? Peter, by email.

MSE Wendy Answers. This sounds like a Mortgage Exit Administration Fee, the cost most lenders charge to close a mortgage account, and the answer depends on when you took out your mortgage.

In Jan 2007 the regulator told lenders they'd been putting up exit fees too quickly and had to justify the increase. So, if you took out your mortgage before this date you should be asked to pay the cost quoted in your original contract, so check that. As a guide, in 2002 the Woolwich charged £95 and £50 in 1997.

If your mortgage started since Jan 2007 you should have been told the exit fee at the time. For more info see the Mortgage Exit Fees guide.
