Cheapest EVER line rental - £7.99/mth
£60 a year less than BT standard! How does it stack up?

Since Oct's price rises, line rental from BT, TalkTalk & others now costs roughly £150ish a year - but many hardly touch the phone, and use only broadband. Now get the SAME LINE for less (all that changes is who calls are routed through).

  • New! £7.99/mth line rental. Inc. eve & weekend calls

Get a year's contract on Primus' Home Phone Saver specifically via HomePhoneChoices* and line rental's £7.99/mth with inclusive evening & weekend calls (going direct's effectively the same line rental cost, but a longer contract & higher call prices).

  • Cut BT's own cost to £9.99/mth. Inc. weekend calls

If you'd prefer to stick with BT and can afford to pay a year upfront, BT's Line Rental Saver* deal is £119.88 incl. weekend calls. That's equiv. to £9.99/mth (standard is £13.29/mth), so it's a £40 annual saving (far more than it'd earn you in the bank).

Daytime calls for 5p no matter how long you speak

Once line rental's sorted, it's time to slash call costs. Grab an account with a specialist override provider like 18185, where you dial a prefix number to access it. It charges a flat 5p to call landlines during daytimes, compared to BT's 6.4p/min and Primus 3p/min (so save £3.80 an hour). Calls to mobiles can be half the cost too.

Some providers block overrides, but BT can't due to competition rules and we've Primus's written promise it won't until at least 2012.

Urgent! Help nonline family save on energy. New Guide
'Save £300 switching to online tariffs! Great but what about m'granny?'

Energy prices are rocketing, we've urged EVERYONE on standard tariffs to switch to online ones, cutting typical bills from £1,250/year to £950. Many have replied 'what about my parents/grandparents who can't/don't use the web?' Well, we can't change the system, but if you've a trusting relationship & want to help... Step 1: Set up an email. If they don't have an email address, get them a Gmail or Hotmail account they can access, or you can monitor or print for them. Step 2: Do a comparison. Use a comparison site (pref with them there), it's better if you have the bills, but can be done without. Top Picks: (cashback only via these MSE links): Energyhelpline* pays £15 cashback per switch. Dual Fuel: MoneySupermarket* £30 in cash. Both send cash once the switch is actioned (c. 2 mths later) via post or to a bank account, so web access isn't key. Step 3: If poss. set up a direct debit. It cuts bills by up to 10% more, and you can usually phone in meter readings to keep it accurate. Step 4: Online tariffs with offline access: Surprisingly some tariffs call themselves online but still offer paper billing, we take you through who does what in the full New Guide: Nonline Energy Switching Related: Cheap Gas & Elec, Boiler Cover

'I reclaimed £144 from my old phone provider'
Old broadband, mobile & phone bill reclaim SUCCESSES flood in

Earlier this month we launched a guide to getting back £10 million of your cash held by old telecoms providers. Fantastically the successes have included much bigger amounts than we expected and stretched back as far as 2007. Why you may be owed: While a few companies (eg, BT and the Post Office) have always auto-refunded any credit owed when you cancel, most don't (eg, Sky & Three) and hold onto your cash unless you ask for it back. Don't assume you didn't have credit left, it's often a by-product of paying in advance, or because a promo deal (eg, 3 months free) worked via a credit at the end of the period. Successes so far: Lots reported in the forum, including Sheppie2305: "Did as instructed and to my amazement found I have a £144 refund due to me from Talktalk. Well impressed. Thank you" The success rate is over 50%. Real Life MONEY MORAL DILEMMA:
Should I keep dating for freebies?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
I've been going on a few dates with this guy who's really sweet but I don't think it's going anywhere. He's however very keen and I don't want to be mean and end it for no reason. Plus he always takes me to posh restaurants that I normally wouldn't even dream of going to, and I'm enjoying that. Should I come clean or enjoy the freebies? Question Of The Week

MoneySaving Polls

Q. Is it correct that a cheque presented after 6 months is no longer valid? Joy, by email

Sunny's A: It's common practice to reject cheques that are over 6 months old to provide the payer with some protection from money jumping from their account when it may've been paid another way.

However, this is at the discretion of individual banks and they won't always automatically reject a cheque issued more than 6 months ago. Often cheques for small amounts are processed electronically meaning dates may be overlooked.

The only certain way to cancel a cheque is to request that a stop be placed on it. If you've held onto a cheque fore more than 6 months, try to get a replacement.

However, in any disputes, a cheque remains legally valid to prove you're owed the money for six years.

This week's poll:

What counts as child poverty?

Last week's poll result:

Time to stop Christmas presents?

A big 76% think presents should be limited to just kids or immediate family. At the extremes 7% believe in no presents at all, while 5% will go all out and make their gifts big and plentiful.
